Aren't fuel taxes a state issue? Why would the IRS be involved?

So would have the OP.....2 wrongs don't make a right. Now if the thief had advanced on him , then all bets are off. Now need to potentially cause yourself all kinds of trouble. A few gallons of fuel aren't worth a trip to jail or a lawsuit....

I am old school, a beat down would get my vote. along with a crowbar through his fuel tank for the heck of it. just don't trip when you step over his crumbled body when you walk away! caught a boy once in chiefland fla at the old 76 truckstop that used to be there (showing my age now). some years ago. woke me from a deep sleep, caught him red handed. there was a little more red on him when I was finished with him. didn't waste my time calling anyone, just hopped in my truck and drove away. didn't care what shape he was in then, don't care now.

State fuel taxes are a state issue but there is always federal fuel tax which is what the IRS enforces, I think most states let the IRS handle their enforcement as well.

I had my tanks dipped in UT once and the ####### wanted to dip the tanks on the bedtruck I was hauling. He was pissed that I wouldn't let him crawl up there and do it. I calmly explained to him and Tyler UDOT officer that that truck wasn't on the road but on my trailer and therefore it was off-road and fuel tax laws didn't apply. The DOT man agreed with me and told me it get on my way but the IRS man was befuddled about why he couldn't check my other truck.

Do citizen arrests still exist? Maybe that would be the route to go. Of course he put up a fight and you had to defend yourself.

Thieves need to leave some blood behind. Sometimes it's all the lesson they get.

Pops got audited when he owned a small business and didn't pay taxes (shocker)
Handed the guy they sent a stack of boxes, full of 8 years worth of documents in absolutely no order whatsoever. After much blood, sweat, and tears, the IRS came to the realization that they actually owed my dad money... they never followed up.

While I deplore the scumbag for stealing your reefer fuel, buy a locking gas cap and just move on, besides is all this worth 30 gallons of fuel?

Well there is that upside ... the guy stealing fuel won't be blocking the fuel lanes.
