Been on the road for 7 days now. I think I am going crazy.

After a certain point I just get to the point where I cannot stand to look at a truck, let alone be in one. How long that takes varies. Sometimes it's 3 weeks, sometimes it's 3 days. I'm definitely glad I don't work somewhere that makes me "earn" hometime.

7 days? That's a stroke of luck. You'll attain "crazy" sooner and it will all feel better.

I've worked for a couple of "every weekend home" companies, and it was great, at least for me. Perfect balance, again "for me." I like getting out on the road for 5 days and KNOWING that I will be home Friday nite or early Saturday morning and not having to leave before early Monday. Seems like this is a lot more common in the Southeast than the Midwest, don't know why. Once deadheaded from Colorado Springs to Mexico MO just so they could get me home by Friday nite (based in Nashville at the time). That was BNE, Birmingham Nashville Express, best company I ever worked for, gone now, sadly.
Ran for Gold Country out of St Cloud Mn, and they were home every weekend, too, if there was freight headed that way and there usually was, 9 out of 10 weekends.
I think the main thing is KNOWING I will be home on the weekend, not HOPING I will be home. Even if it was home every other weekend, if I KNEW I was going to be home on schedule, it would be OK, to me (more $$).
As has been said, shouldn't have to ASK to get home.Last edited: Oct 3, 2014

I agree. A driver can run from one side of the country and back in 9 days, even on e-logs. Give or take a couple days for loading/unloading, a driver should get back to point of origin in under 2 weeks and be able to do at least a 34. This depends if the company actually gives a crap and tries to plan loads with the driver partially in mind...my company does this and it seems to work well for both parties.

Well said. I am home every weekend. I even have the option to go home during the week sometimes.

I've taken my resets at home every time since I started venturing back out on the road again a couple months ago. Just look for a regional dedicated job that has a regular weekly schedule. This job I have now I technically only have to sleep in the truck 2-3 nights a week, which I don't mind. I did two years of "home every might" LTL work and the novelty wears off. Day job trucking gets monotonous and has little adventure factor.

Hi Brandonpdx, that can be true about home every night. Get's to be like a factory job, (not that there's anything wrong with a factory job), but depends on where you're at in life. I too, when I had my own truck, spent a night or 2 a week in the truck, but I had young kids at home, and we lived in a rural setting, and I had a lot of fun with my kids, and even the couple nights a week, I'd miss them terribly, and the things we did, so I went back to a home every night job. Now I'm an old man, so it would be no biggie to be gone. Quite frankly, I don't think OTR is any more exciting than a home every night job. Driving a truck is a boring job, with an occasional flash of excitement.
