Without breaking the shaft it would be very hard for any debris to get past the seals that keep the oil in the center section.

If oil got out, the seals were compromised, and the risk of contaminated oil exists.

Looks like the nut backed off that holds the compressor wheel on. I saw that happen on a Cat turbo a few years ago. It shattered the wheel just like that one.

Thus threads are setup so that if the wheel spins on the shaft it should tighten the nut, not loosen. There where however some turbos that weren't built this way.

that sounds like myself. yeah I have known many to go thru what you have, with turbo failure. for the $500.00 & some change & doing it at home before it went out makes a big difference. that's one of the main reasons I still drive my 95' intl with the ser 60 det. parts availability & price. glad you got it fixed. with my ser 60 it does not cost that much to carry spare parts on board, but at over 2 grand? just too much to spend for a spare.

lost the lock nut on the shaft then it came apart.
