I have a 2006 Detroit Series 60 12.7 engine doing something weird.
My temp gauge will rise as the engine the warms up then the temp gauge will fall to nothing and the check engine light will come then the engine fan will come on. It will go for about 15-20 miles and the temp gauge will start to rise and the check engine light will go out and the engine fan will shut off. Sometimes it will run at 180 degrees for half the day then the gauge will fall and the check engine light will come on and the fan will start. Sometimes it is just the opposite, the the light and fan will be on half the day.
The check engine light doesn't leave a code when I try to flash it. It says 0 diagnostic codes on the readout in the dash.
Temp sender bad??

What is the code displayed when you click the engine diag button? Do you have one of those? It should flash the codes
Oops. Just read you tried that. Sorry -
No code will be displayed as it,s like you turned the key off - check your dash plugs

I had the same problem. It was the coolant temp sensor. It was pretty corroded, but a quick fix.

It was a broken plug on the water temp sender. Replaced the sender and plug and all is good now.
Ukumfe Thanks this. -
the sensor on the head on passenger side of motor? or the one at the thermostat housing?
