I want to be alert while driving and I'm worried about sleep deprivation as I head out over the road for the first time.

Are OTC sleep aids like Sominex or Benadryl effective, or do they just make you groggy the next day?

I try not to use them often, but when I have to flip from driving during the day to driving at night I will take 4 Benadryl to knock me out.

Don't wait until you've tossed and turned for 4 hours or you definitely will be groggy. If you think you'll need them, take them as soon as you start your break.

I find a nice glass of pinot noir along with a handful of ambien before bed works wonders. If I can't do that, melatonin seems to help sometimes. Or play a podcast of obama's latest excuse why he wants to restart what he promised to stop for 6 years

If you get in enough hours you're be fine. At least more than 4. Any of the OTC PM's will work. I stay away from aspirin PM's because of my stomach but any of them work. But of course we all know un-aided sleep is the best but who can find that these days?

If I really need to sleep I will take only 1 small tablet (store brand sleep aid) as early as I can. I have noticed if I don't get more than 5 hours of sleep after taking one I feel like a zombie for hours!
