I was wondering when I first pulled up TTR and saw the news story about the flatbedder that stopped for a Fire Truck and his I-Beams went through the cab, if the truck was equipped with a Headache rack or not In the OPs post you can see that this driver had a headache rack and its obvious that no aluminum headache rack is going to stop a 40K lb coild. I was wondering if anyone knows what they will stop, besides bags of potato chips?
Pure Genius!!!!

a headache rack will obnly stop about 20k lbs.
SheepDog Thanks this. -
That does cover quite a bit than.... Which tells me, I would rather have one, and not need it, than to not have one and need it.... -
they ar worth it for sure. they are good for load shifts. but if you have a coil, or a steel load that moves(like an I beam) your screwed no matter how you look at it

Thats why i see it best to at least meet the same amount of securement weight as the item being secured. Granted, it might not stop it, but it will make it less likely for it to come loose. I had a load of steel beams that I picked up from Gerdau Ameristeel the other day and delivered them to Alro Steel in St Louis yesterday, total weight was 41350lbs, I use all 10 chaines to secure it to the deck. Im pretty sure at 65,000lbs of securement it might not have prevented them from sliding through the cab in the event of head on collision at highway speeds, but it just makes me feel better knowing my securement is what others consider "over secured". I never heard of such a thing.SheepDog Thanks this.

I do coils as well I use 7 thru the eye. I have seen daycabs in memphis use 2 chains and I ask them wtf and he said he was only going less than 100 miles.😑
-
wow, just wow. if im going more than 10 FEET i will use 7-9 chains(or as many as i can possible get thru the eye)
