Hope everyone is having a great day.
Here's the info:
2010 Cascadia sleeper
550,000 miles
Detroit DD15
10 speed auto
DPF
King pins replacement recently
Non-service agreement lease
Can't see any major issues but haven't checked VIN or anything online yet because I'm leaning towards no
Yes, I have done some research on the new emissions stuff and this one should be a 09 engine, pre DEF. I have heard mixed results and some say having DPF + DEF is better than DPF alone. I'm not sure because some say it just depends on the engine and model year.
Now, if you're wondering why I'm even considering the truck its because of the price and the fact I wouldn't be taking on a loan for this, I'd take over the lease with option to buy. The guy cannot make the payments because he is not physically able to work right now. It means about a $8,000-9,000 discount if bought at lease end. According to commercialtrucktrader the average price is $59,000 for similar miles and model year. A rough estimate omitting the well-specd trucks listed on there, I'd say the average price is $53-54k. So yeah I'd be paying about $45k with the purchase, he's already paid about 1/3 of the total lease interest, wouldn't have the loan on the company's balance sheet/books or credit report which is appealing because we are trying to finance and lease several more trucks either through the bank or lenders/lessors.
I've already told the guy I probably won't do it but I'd appreciate some final opinions. And if my analysis is way off somewhere, I'd love to be corrected. Thanks guys.
Buy this 2010 Freightliner or no go..?

Sounds like you're trying to get backup ammo to use on your wife with the purchase lol sorry, man, I don't know about buying trucks but it all sounds good to me.

I wonder about king pins at 550,000. Kind of unusual, but not unheard of. If you proceed in the affirmative, have an oil analysis done.
I would not spend that much on a plain-jane, ragged out, mis-treated truck with those specs, but it MIGHT be worth the asking price to me if in tip/top shape with new tires.. -
I'm not sure what you mean here -

I would opt for a pre def truck when buying a cascadia! I was at the dealer today with my friends 2011 cascadia with DPF+DEF. Truck has 500200 miles on it with DD15. He wrote out a check for 13,590.00 to replace filters and the def BOX. Labor was 12 hrs so you can imagine that rest went to parts! Dealer himself said to buy a 2010 or 2013+. GL!

New York can be quite rough on the steer axle, as well as the rest of the truck, and the driver. It sounds like the truck has a set back axle, so carrying even more weight on the steer axle on rough roads can equal much more accelerated wear.

Lol, bro, I mean that it seems like you had your mind made up to buy the ride before posting about it and wanted backup for your wife who was probably against the idea. No offense meant with the comment. I was just making commentary on the observation I made. If you like it, buy it. If I'm wrong, sorry, man, just having conversation.

And no, I'm leaning towards not getting the truck but more want affirmation to confirm my research. The company owner is old school and likes to go with his gut, I'm the opposite. I'm all about research, data, doing tests etc but also have to confirm a solid no with some others' opinions and that way I'll also not have to do additional tests/inspections on the truck. I'ts mostly the emission stuff to watch out for.Last edited: Oct 8, 2014
KentuckyReject Thanks this. -
Thanks for info, sorry about your friend. This is exactly why I haven't rushed any truck purchase. The issue I'm seeing is some folks are saying yes to Pre DEF some are saying no. Do you know if he was idling the truck much? I've read a lot of issues come from idling and soot building up without enough regenerations to burn it off.
