Haulng fuel for yourself

They give you a discount if you smoke like a chimney while refueling the underground tanks at a gas station. Nothing like terrifying everyone around you in a square block.

 

Check the cost of insurance before you get all excited......probably not worth it for a one truck operation.

 

I've wished many times our company would allow Owner Ops. I just want a stick and a long nose pete. I can't stand these auto transmissions and set back axle trucks haha

 

Getting on as OO is not that hard. Most will require you use their trailer. Not sure why. Lot of liability. Would probably get another yr or so before I made that move.

 

It takes a lot of money in bonds to run O/O. The last I looked it was $2 million before you could even hook up to load. I'm sure the insurance is out of this world too because clean up cost can run into the millions easy. It would be nice to see more O/O's hauling gasoline but they are just not out there in numbers.

 

Hey driver81, i am an owner operator, and i can tell you that my insurance runs me $20,000.00 a yr. Every terminal is slightly different in their ins. requirements, but most will require 4 mil. coverage for your auto, and then they usually require an additional 5 mil. Gen. liability. You will have to get your own icc authority, and the gov. makes you have 5 mil. coverage for that. Then you need gen. liability for an additional 5 mil. In my state I can only get a gen. liability policy for 1 mil., then i have to get what they call umbrella liability for the additional 4 mil. to bring the total to 5 mil. for the general liability. I have a total of 10 mil. Insurance coverage! Make sure you have someone that is promising you some work, because its a lot of money that you will be laying out to be able to haul, and if you dont have someone lined up to haul for, it gets pretty nerve racking real quick. Dont think any of these haulers stick together either. If you own your own trailer, they will no longer talk to you. They are afraid that you will be trying to steal there customers. A used trailer is going to set you back too. There not cheap. Hopefully your tractor is paid for, because if you do he math, a tractor, a trailer, ins payments, fuel to run, it adds up to a lot of money every month to pay out. If you start running hard, paying out is not a problem, but if work is real spotty, then it can get tricky! Good luck, i hope this was helpful.
