So the consensus is they dont get paid, right?
-
From what I've seen, not enough hours/work available to make it a worthwhile career. Pay is decent though, and you may get some good benefits if you're lucky.

The concensus is they get paid weekly......very WEAKLY!!! LOL

In the middle South the pay is the lowest around. Bus drivers get paid $25 per route, so $50 a day. Most routes are an hour long and you have to be at the school 15 - 30 minutes before the kids are let out. Sometimes have to drive to 2 other schools to pick up from the Middle School and High School. As a sub driver I look for the shorter routes, as some are 35 to 45 minutes long. I also won't drive certain buses that have a nasty kids on them that the regular driver does not discipline.
As a sub driver I can set my own schedule and don't have to be tied down to Mon - Fri. twice a day driving. I am retired and have other things to do besides driving. Also, none of the buses have AC except the Special Ed buses, so it is extra hot driving in August in the south when the bus sets in the sun with the windows closed all day. So I don't drive in August either.
There is a shortage of drivers here, and the low pay is the main reason, I believe.
