My Detroit is leaking oil at the cam rear cap again. Is this job that I can tackle or should I take it to a shop? My main question is: do I need to loosen all the cam caps to remove the rear cap to repair the leak or can I remove only the rear cap to repair the leak. Also do I need the J-44706 tool remove the cap and torque it back down? Thanks

There is a cap cover there with three bolts, easy enough to remove it, clean it, re apply some 515 or silicone and reinstall it.

    bigguns Thanks this.

Just like Heavyd said. Good and clean is important, there is no gasket, if it's not clean and dry, the sealer wont work well. Also check very close that the leak is not from the valve cover right above it.

I commented shortly after Heavyd did. I don't know where it went. I cleaned the back of the head and ran the truck for about 15 min. I was hoping the valve cover would be the problem. NOT. The oil is coming out below that gasket and a little to the left of the cover with three bolts. I have a Detroit mechanic coming Wed. after supper to do the repair. Going by his information it is too much of a job for my skill level. Thanks Heavyd and GrapeApe.

Sounds like your wire harness is leaking through, however, in a mechanics world, left and right are viewed from behind the engine looking forward.

I put a new injector/jake harness when I got the truck. The old one was leaking but this one is good. It is also completely dry around this one. I hear you on the left and right. I need to go back and double check myself.

It is a Detroit no spacer gasket. Thinking Cat. What can cause a problem is if the drain hole in the bottom of the head to relieve the preasure at the cap is plugged,
    Just a thought

I have the same problem on my Series 60 right now. Its going to the shop Friday to get the overhead run and fix that leak while they're poking around. Gonna clean it and put some sealant around the cover then torque it all back down.

It was the bearing cap not the 3 bolt cam cover or valve cover. I got it good and clean and ran the engine watching for oil. The o-ring between the cap and head appears to be bad.
