if you have alot of miles on them it would be a good idea to put new cups in.

You can buy a special slide hammer made specifically for them.

This is an old thread, but Im reviving it for anyone who needs recent info on this. I am in the process of changing my injector cups/sleeves (6TS 3406E) at the moment. Never had the valve covers off an engine before, so this is a new experience. I do know a guy who works for CAT, so he can give me all the details. The injector torque specs are 37 ft lbs, and the jakes/rockers are 80 ft lbs. I was just prying the #1 injector out but it it seems pretty stiff...good thing I came in to check this out as I never drained the fuel from the head at all...will update as I go...

BTW...the CAT tool is pretty expensive IMO...especially for a 1 time job (I hope). I made my own using a steel 1" pipe plug, welded a 1/2" rod to it approx 2' long, slid a heavy wall piece of pipe over it and then welded another 1/2" rod across the top at 90 degrees so it will work as a slide hammer and also a T handle to thread into the cups.

    Heavyd Thanks this.

I would also like to see a pic of your tool. I believe the spec on installing injectors is to tighten to 42lbs....loosen the bolt back off ....then retighten to 42lbs. This is what I have always done anyways.

This may not be proper but is the easiest way I have found to drain the fuel in the head. I purchased a air blower that has a hose that will draw fluids up and spray it out. I just pop the injectors out one at a time put hose down into the cyl and blow gun into a rag to minimize fuel overspray. Do that with each injector removal and drop oil when done to rid of any fuel that might have made it past the rings. I am a licensed mech and will probly get hammered by some other wrenchers about this technique but it has worked for me for years no problems.
