are they any better then the older ntc400 engines is this a big cam4 engine or does it have a different cam then the older ntc's I know the blocks are the same 855's.

also heard these are low flo cooling engines, small radiator hoses? anything bad about this do they overheat?

I dont know about your first question, but the second one is yes they are low flow. I have heard of guys switching them over to high flow, but I had a 87 star with a 444 cummins in it, and I never had an issue with the truck overheating, not once.

I was skeptical when I bought the truck, because of all the bad that I have heard about these engines, but mine was really good, had lots of power, reliable, good on fuel.

Curious to hear what others say about them.

    flc120 Thanks this.

Most problems with the low flow engines is the radiator blocking plates are broken.
The 444 has step timing controls using oil to advance the injection timing. I use to do most of the work on them at my work, they are very suseptable to oil leaks from a lot of different places, and just because you change an injector with a new one does not mean it will not leak. Working on them you may have to take it apart 2 or three time to repair all the leaks. They have very little torque at low RPM to start. We had one in a fire truck with an automatic, it would not start on a hill, they had to replace it with a Detroit.
If you have a choice I would not buy it.
    Just a thought

wow johnp3 that's crazy to hear Ive had 300 BC cummins which even though they were small would lug an 80k load of tiles in a 20" container with no issues, or a 90k load of grapefruit with front mounted genset in a 45 reefer container and they pull pretty good, the bridge to get into the Miami port is pretty steep with a load from a complete stop from Biscayne blvd but the smaller cummins ive had before have all pulled well up hill, sounds like your describing an L10 or M11 fartbox lol. Now in now way am I saying it will out torque the b model cat I had in my FLC but they have balls to

I did not say all Cummins did not pull at low RPM just the 444, they would pull down from higher RPM to 1200 but had nothing coming up. I would rather have an M11 than a 444 any day.

I would never want another m11 again dam lil motors are hit or miss plus they wont hold over 500k without blowing or needing a rebuild down south here in this city driving IMO. ive seen some good running 444's but never owned one.
