So, do the loads arrive via the tunnel or the bridge?

 

Having sold product that shipped to Hawaii I can tell you it ain't cheap. Everything is either flown in or comes by container ship to Honolulu. Once in Honolulu they then have smaller container ships that service the islands.

I could ship a 40' container from China to Long Beach for under $1500. Getting it to the big island of Hawaii from Long Beach is about $3000 (transshipping through Honolulu). THEN it needs to truck somewhere on the island AND get the empty container back to port. Trucking costs were also high, at least two or three times more expensive than a similar load/distance in a big metro area of the mainland.

Transportation costs drive up the cost of food and all consumer goods in Hawaii. Fuel is expensive as well.

 

I thought about it but the casinos would be too tempting and plus I need to live relatively to close to water.

 

The tunnel tolls on the bridge makes the GW look cheap.

 

I had also once dreamed of living in the aloha state. About 15 years ago then again about 9 years ago I tried to find a livable wage job on Hawaii. I wasn't chosey I would have accepted any island.

You were correct in the info that you got that they would rather hire a local over any one that just came over to the islands.

Unfortunatly they also prefer to hire any Hawaiian over a average joe white bread guy. That is just the way the system works there.

 

I was on big island this summer and saw a few t600 with sleepers pulling containers and water tanks Lol. Yeah there are jobs in Honolulu doing port work and I see jobs on craigslist.

 

Good luck landing a driving job on the islands. If your not local, your chances are pretty slim getting hired on. Its not what but who you know gets you a job there. Island life is great if you have an open mind. Check the haole owned construction companies, you might have a chance. I dont think I ever seen a haole drive for port companies when I was there.

Any fuel drivers in kauai? Or anything tanker really... I work for a fuel company here in MN and saw a ton of fuel trucks there. I have friends there too who could probably help with a job.

Looking to move there in 8-10 years but it's never too early to network. I'll be back in October too so I'll be asking around.

What are wages like? I'm seeing around 18-22 an hour online.
