Wanting to get into trucking for years and now is my chance. Been enticed by the "free" trucking schools, and sign on to work as indentured servant for 6 months, but have seen some incredibly bad reviews of said schools/trucking companies. Have called a local school here close, and he echoed those same "don't do its" as most of the reviewers, on google/youtube have. Any thoughts? Good and bad decisions you have made, etc? Anyway, I am excited after 30 years in the car business, coupled with 17 years active duty and national guard service to do something different.
extremely new and questioning.....

Welcome to the forums Leather Helmet
and don't let those reviews discourage you. Most people don't make it past 6 months yet alone 1 year starting out and some of the vets that work in those schools trucked back when it was not so heavily regulated and warn new drives to stay away since they feel there is no good in trucking no more. A lot of trucking company sponsored schools are not that good but they will get you into the industry with a job at the end for no money down. If you are able to get into a cdl school not "mill" then that is even better since there are many companies that pay more and hire new CDL graduates.

Thanks Gomez, yep, rather than fly out west to be contracted to a company I have just about decided, that if my VA benefits will pay for the local school here, that I will go that route. And I have seen that trucking company recruiters visit them regularly. Any advice as to what BS to believe from them and what not to believe?

They will tell you want you want to hear. Home time, no problem, also we have a lot of miles for you, then you get out there and maybe due 1500 miles a week while never being routed to go home for a few months. Simple choose your poison, and lube that you want them to use. Not all companies are bad but there is no perfect one. Just ask on here and you will get a list of companies that are the best for new drivers. The money is in tanker and there are a few companies that hire right out of school if you go to an approved CDL school. If you like moving around then there is flatbed which still pays more than hauling a container around and lets you get out and do some exercise. Simple stick it out for a year and even more companies come available. ChinaTown is the guy to talk to since he knows almost every good company out there and would be able to answer all your questions more accurately.
Leather Helmet Thanks this.
