In my flatbed days, can't recall a single load that wouldn't fit a '45 other than posted for '53 only.
I owned a 48 and the extra 3' was mostly used to stow my tarps. <--consider that vs. adding alum boxes beneath trailer?

Mine is a combo so pretty much the same as an all aluminum 48

But to compare apples to apples, an all aluminum 45x96 will certainly be lighter than an all aluminum 48x102. Spread axles make a difference too because tandems need a steel subframe.

I run a 45x96 trailer with a sliding tandem. We haul our own products almost all the time (palatalized stone). one thing to think about is if you have a head board on the trailer you wont be able to axle out a 48 foot load of lumber with 3 feet hanging off the back with a tandem. It should not be a problem with a spread though. With my day cab cascadia and an 06 Clark steel trailer im at 30800 empty. FYI. Heavy trailer but tough as nails.

Well, since you're hauling your own product it isn't a real big deal for you. But a light weight like that? AND with a day cab?

That translates to an awful lot of lost revenue for someone for hire.

i'm gonna dare to say, that most loads that actually take up all 48 feet. aren't really worth hauling, correct?

    onion, mulch, hay, cars, etc.
