I agree, excellent thread. I am interested in getting into the trucking business and have read several good threads here. Based on what I've read, how much you make is heavily dependent on where you're running and what you're hauling. One size does not fit all. I don't doubt that Richter can make the $$ he's saying because he out of Phily where freight rates are higher than say, Texas, where I'm from.

Money is still that good in the oil fields? I thought the likes of Schneider, Stevens, and other megas screwed that up a few years ago. With the price of oil it's close to being a break even proposition fracking you better make it while you still can.

You had better find a food service company and stay away from the oilfield. Oil went to 77.50 today and when it hits 75 the oil boom is over and it will be the great bust of 2015 but don't listen to me. I was in the Oklahoma bust in the 80s and don't know anything.

The American Transportation Research Institute says the average cost per mile for major carriers is reported in their study to be about $1.68/mile in 2013 View attachment ATRI-Op-Costs-2014-Infographic-Final.pdf

This includes driver wage cost too,, so if you are leased to a carrier and you are getting less than $1.68/mile the company is paying you less than what it cost to run their own trucks,,you can find the complete report at their website

I pull a flatbed and it really depends on if your a real go getter. I'm a slacker and have been called a Hobby Trucker. I don't have a mortgage payment, truck/trailer payment and no loans or credit card debt.

For 2 months I worked my ### off basically taking a ###### shower in my truck. I was dirty. My clothes were dirty. My truck was dirty and I was not a happy camper.....BUT.....I made a butt load of money. Unlike a regular job where you make a fixed amount each week with a truck it's up to you how hard you want to run.

Going from one load to another non stop does not leave much time to take care of other things. 10 hour breaks just don't cut it. Your tired, dirty and hungry. Even taking the time for a shower is not appealing. You just want to eat and lay down. It gets old.

I've seen two of my online friends pull themselves out of a hole by running hard and it didn't take long at all.

There is a shortage of hazmat drivers willing to beat their trucks up on the reservation.
I'm sure rates are lower for oil off the reservation, although water rates are higher off the reservation.
