If it gets icy in Texas you'll see plenty of those smart people like you and me that live here doing some stunt driving. I would much rather be up north in winter weather than down here. One of the scariest winter drives I've ever had was from Bryan, TX to the house a few years ago. Hwy 6 was a sheet of ice and they hadn't sanded any of it from Bryan to the 290 junction. I literally saw one truck get his trailer almost completely sideways and by some miracle pull out of it before blocking the road. Every bridge was slicker than snot, you could just feel that if you even had a serious thought about tapping the brakes that things were going to get sideways. That same morning I saw a woman do a literal 360 on 35W north of Fort Worth on a patch of ice and come out of it straight and keep driving like she did it all the time.
Stuka....where do YOU live in TX that has Never seen ice or snow??? Parts of s TX....dont see it often but I can't think of anywhere I haven't seen it at one time or another....and u ain't lived till you try to make drops from Dallas to The Alamo on a wet 25-30degree day
Can someone please explain these " skills" y'all claim to have for driving fast on ice? What exactly are you doing that the ones in the ditch aren't? I get it anyone can haul butt when you're the only one on the road.
The point was you won't see me doing those things. Do I comfortably travel faster than most? Absolutely. Doesn't mean I'm being unsafe, it just means I'm more comfortable on less than perfect surfaces than you. If you see me doing the things I mentioned above, I'd deserve getting called out. But this constant BS on the radio of calling anyone who's travelling faster than you "unsafe" is just that, BS. As I've pointed out multiple times around here, many of us in the northern part of the Plains spend whole days driving on roads that most wouldn't dream of driving on. That experience matters. Just because I'm leaving Mr White-knuckle Noobie in my wake doesn't mean anything other than he hasn't yet developed the skills some of us possess. And as I also pointed out, men tend to have trouble acknowledging they aren't the very best at what they do. Anyone more skilled is tough on their ego. So the haters hate. *shrugs*
I think the one point many seem to miss&HAS been mentioned more n once is: Stop confusing very Cold Hi Plains ice/snow with ice/snow elsewhere......Snow out east is very wet&slick...ice is usually created by temps js barely below freezin&therefore is VERY WET&slick.....Most snow in the far northern reaches actually has a very low moisture content..and more dusty than slick.....and over time as this compacts....it gets icy....but it is still VERY Dry&Cold....more like run in on hard pack dirt than ice....and you can run up on it....much much different than run in say up 81...where the temps 27&the snow is heavy&wet&the more it compacts the slicker it gets....and where quite often....the temps gets above freezing for a few hours each afternoon and allows the top layer to thaw get wet&then refreeze slicker in snit after dark
Did you see anywhere where I said I haul ### on slick ice? I even told you twice that you won't see me doing that. But do please continue to assume... I don't suppose it occurred to you that after all the years and miles I've run in crappy conditions without incident just might mean I know what the #### I'm talking about? You ever had a tractor trailer sideways, on purpose? How about a bootleg turn in the back of the lot? Or maybe even a trailer stepping a couple feet out because it found the unmarked edge of an unplowed road? (W/O crapping you pants and stopping asap.) There's dozens of guys on here who have, and little pissant fair-weather super truckers like you can't even begin to comprehend that it's just another day at the office that's a little more stressful than most. So please do continue, because you scared little boys are so amusing! Even if you do tee me off sometimes!
Those onboard cameras are pretty cheap now. Post up your awesome ice racing videos, that,or STHU. These big hairy chested bragging stories don't hold water. There's always someone faster, meaner, and just all round better. It didn't take me getting any family advice to learn that. Post up those 600 mile ice road unchained 60mph videos. I got all the time in the world
Ah! Another to assume, huh? Ain't no bragging involved, just telling it the way it is. Do remember what Dizzy Dean said? It is a fact that some are comfortable at a faster speed than you have chosen. Did I say that was always a safe speed? Huh! Looks like I scolded Ramblin' for running too close to the edge. Imagine that! You guys are merely demonstrating the point that men can't face the fact that others might be more skilled than themselves. Oh, and please do continue to throw the ice strawman out there. And just because I have this sharp stick in my hand... 4 years. Wow! I bet I have more days than that where I rarely saw pavement! Heavens to mercy; the wrecker bills I've paid from all those days in the ditch, running along faster than most in such unsafe conditions!
Great post! The first sentence is one of the best I've seen regarding winter driving, or driving in inclement weather of any kind.
