I wouldn't run an old truck OTR, but local or shorter-haul regional, definitely. Basically, within towing distance back to the house if something bites it.

I'd run my K100 out to Montana and Utah on a whim. After a while, getting handshakes for having the balls to do it got me the message. When it did blow up, it was only 400 miles from home, and has stayed there since I got free storage because the shop had no idea what to do with the thing (official story was they waited 4 days for a boroscope that nobody knew about).

When you do replace the hoses, I suggest you go to CAT and have them built with rebuildable heads. That's 60% or more of the replacement cost on most hoses, and they can build you a new one on the spot. They can also get you some host that makes a great wire loom. I kept my old rubber air hoses and chopped them up to slip over any potential rub points on the new ones, and zip tied them in place. CAT will even build you a hose inside a tube for odd bits, like fuel crossover hoses that have 18" of ground clearance. Just make sure you bring them the tube to put it in.
