But I drive a single axle big box armored truck although a CDL is not required. Does that count? I drive OTR I guess since we go out of state every day. I see the dump trucks everyday on the interstates and keep thinking about doing that as a career. It looks like in KY where I live you only need a Class B CDL to operate dump trucks. It says it's a written test then I would have to get a Class B truck to take the driving part of the test. Any advice on what route I should take with that? Is the pay worth it for a dump truck career in trucking? How are the benefits in the trucking business?
Don't know if I'm considered a trucker...

If you have ever p.i.s.s.e.d in a bottle and left in the parking lot for someone else to pick up...you might be a trucker
If you weigh 300 pounds and have to wear sweat pants because that's the only thing comfortable on your waist...you might be a trucker
If you dump your ashtray full of cigarette butts out your window onto the truck stop parking lot for everyone to step in...you might be a trucker
If you tie up the fuel pumps without regard for anyone else while you go in an take a dump and grab something to eat...you might be a trucker
Do you fit the profile?!Balakov100, TGUNKEL, 6daysontheroad and 12 others Thank this. -
Driving has been a good career for me.
My suggestion would be to go all the way and get the Class A. The added effort and expense will pay back huge over the life of your career compared to a Class B. --Assuming you stick with driving.Big Don Thanks this. -
i don't see how you could only need a class B to drive a dump truck. isn't there a weight thing for each class?
the dump trucks around here will haul at least 52,000 pounds. up to 67,000 pounds, depending on how many lift axles are added.
go for the A. and be done with it. -
Do you carry a big leather wallet with a chain hooked to it?
Do you wear cowboy hat and boots?
When sitting in a truck stop with other drivers can you consistently top their stories no matter how outrageous or unbelievable?
If so then you certainly have what it takes.rubberducky68, Puppage and Allthebestnamesaretaken Thank this. -

There are companies that will help you get your class b because they need the drivers.A landscaping company here helps ppl get there class A and B license. They furnish the trk to take the test.I imagine companies in your area will do the same thing.

Guess I am not a real truck driver then. I don't piss in bottles, weigh 300 pounds, I don't wear sweat pants, I don't smoke, I don't park in the fuel island except to get fuel.
I refuse to eat inside a truck stop and be bombarded with stories so full of #### you can smell it coming out of their mouths. I also don't have a wallet with a chain on it. I don't wear a cowboy hate, but I do wear a Freightliner ball cap and I do wear steel toe boots.Boethel and rubberducky68 Thank this. -
oh well, I HAVE been called a "steering wheel holder" more than once on this site -

I don't do the fashion trend of shorts and sandals in a snowstorm.b l a c k b e a r d Thanks this.
