Get verizon or at&t(so you have service everywhere) and then get a weather app with automatic updates and be done with it.

Back in the day. :) Before all the fancy gadgets we roll down the window and stick your head out. If your eyes froze shut in less than 5 seconds it was below freezing.

True, but when you know it's somewhere "near freezing", and you're running across AR I-40 and it's been drizzling all morning and you know colder air is settling down into the region based on the Wx forecast you saw last night, keeping track of a few degrees temp fall is kind important and some handy information. At 60-70 MPH heading in a particular direction, things can change in a matter of minutes.

I've never used any of the outside temperature devices available in truck stops so I can't offer any tips to the OP. But I consider a reliable outside temp gauge should be standard equipment on any truck.

That's good that you've had "no problems". But if that's you're only tool to serve as an ice warning you're going to have problems eventually. In some conditions (no cars, dark, minimal precip on road surface, etc) it can be almost impossible to say if you're seeing spray or not, or if you're not seeing spray, is it because it's frozen or because there is not enough there? Plus, and most importantly, just because you see spray does not mean there is no freezing going on at the surface. There is going to be a transition point somewhere when the temp is bouncing around 32 degrees F where things are very difficult to say with any degree of certainty what is going on at the road surface
