Not every load can be a homerun, but as your rates fall and trucking expenses rise won't take long before your driving a beat up freightliner day cab pulling a container for Mendez trans.

Sure I like to get a grand a day for my trucks so if a load is going to take me three days to cover I want at least 3000 in order for me to do it. Now I'm running in the patch so it's probably easier for me to get there but it's not impossible to do on the road. I figure my base costs on 200 days at that rate and go from there. Do I always get it, nope but I can usually average pretty close to my rate per day if not over it. Right now I'm on a job with seven trucks turning 1400 a day per truck and next week I'll be on a job turning 1200 a day and the week after I'll be on one turning 850 a day but the three jobs will averages 1150 a day for 21 days.
That 1400 is turning 500 miles a day and the other job will be less.

Because a small company like mine sells service, we get it there when the mega fleets can't..

and when it has to be there we have proven it will be there on time..

rah, rah, rah not everyone is hauling for stagnant rates, you confuse stagnant rates with someone expecting rates to provide a profit no matter how bad they run their business.

    there is a difference

you first need to completely understand the difference of being a lease op and a owner leased on.

I get $8.00 a mile for all miles and I make them pay me that to dead head also. Why, because I'm the only person who can deliver on time. Unless your making as much as me you should give up your truck, CDL and work at Wal-Mart

We should just start a new thread like "$10 mile". It will save a lot of time.

Rates are what you make them. The catch is sometimes great money is there and sometimes it's not. I all I needed and what made me happy was $1.50 to $2.00 per loaded (only) mile I could easily run 3,000-4,000 miles a week all year round and pull those rates in. If you're looking for top dollar you're going to find times when it's abundant and times when it's scarce. That said, even in times when excellent rates are easy to get there, are still lots of owner operators who wouldn't know how to get a great rate if they tried. There's lots of people working for peanuts when freight is hot.

That's why for people like Kevin Rutherford, who's apparently pushing for everyone to go independent because rates have never been better, well those people are partially right. But the thing is it doesn't matter how great rates are at times nor how smoking hot any particular market may be. He shouldn't be doing that because the truth is not everyone is cut out nor will figure out how to run a trucking business successfully. It ain't rocket science but the flip side of that if it was easy everyone would happily be getting rich. If you can't figure out how to swing a rate, understand there's always ups and downs, you shouldn't be telling others who know better that "rates are stagnant".
