I heard someone saying that they used a muffler from a small motor cycle of some sort, Might be cheaper. Worth checking out.
-
APU's don't put out enough heat to be plumbed into the main exhaust system and will cause problems.
-
I have seen the exhaust tapped into 5 inch pipe on a few apps. I'm talking no Particulate trap and after the muffler (as in under cab muffler systems). The APU will run. Has a higher exhaust manifold pressure while the truck is pulling a load. Didn't seem to help with the noise much.
-
The time has come to make a decision on an APU. I can purchase a TriPak for $8500 installed, but I'm also interested in the PonyPack because it plumbs directly into existing vents.
So Brick I need your feedback on your experience with the PonyPack's performance.
Thanks -
Due to circumstances beyond my control I did't have the PP in service very long.
I can tell you that there were a couple of small bugs to work out and the company has good support because the owner is a former truck O/O and is involved in the business very much.
While I did have it I was happy with the performance. During a 95 degree day in ABQ with a dark colored 86" sleeper I stayed NICE AND COOL! A lot cooler than what Idle Aire kept me in Baytown TX on a 90 degree day.
My biggest complaint was the exhaust is too loud. Possible PP has corrected that in the last couple yrs. -
I bought mine a long time ago. Still in development stage I think. They should have replaced mine 3 mos after I bought it. JUNK.I have spent as much in repairs as new one would cost. Now it is nothing but a battery charger. Ever time I called Rex no matter the reason for the call, part number, help in diagnosing it mattered not his standard statement was " who worked on it last" As if that had any bearing on it
As far as noisy it is the engine on mine not the exhaust. I put 2 mufflers on, and the noise is the same. I reduced the RPM and the noise went down a bit..
My recommendations is DO NOT BUY a Pony Pony. Rex does not listen to the buyers and user for ideas and fixes. -
Do not plumb the exhaust into your trucks exhaust. The exhaust pressure of your main engine at highway speed will in short order damage your PP engine. Especially if one of the valves in the PP is in open position when the PP is turned off. Way too much back pressure on the PP engine.
The muffler on a PP is not off a motorcycle. You must get a muffler designed for diesel exhaust or the muffler will plug solid. Diesel exhaust it heavier and many times more particulates than a gas engine. Recommended aftermarket muffler is a VW diesel muffler. Or have one made. The one I had made plugged after about a year of use.. Not much you can do about the engine noise.I have 2 mufflers mounted and it did not help enough for the cost.So I ran a long flex pipe from muffler up to the frame then along the frame riding on the shock mounting brackets back to the end of frame. A little chrome tip from the auto parts store dressed it up a bit. This flex pipe kept the exhaust noise and fumes way behind the cab and also away from the bunk area of the truck next to me.. The Heat exchanger that came on my unit had such a bad exhaust leak I removed it. Permanently.
Part of the noise is the intake . I put on a after market intake filter system, ( hated the wash type filter with a passion) put a long swimming pool plastic hose on and that helped a little.
I have no clue if Pony Pack is in business yet or not.
When Ed was with PP, customer service was top notch. When Ed and Randy left it turned to piss poor and then to none existent. If REX would have listened to his buyers and customers instead of trying to pass the buck all the time he very possibly could have had the best APU on the market. Alas , it did not happen. -
I fought with mine for 2 years and went and bought a Dynasys from Boomer Diesel in Oklahoma City.
They asked me what I wanted to do with the Pony Pack and I told them they could sell it for scrap if they wanted.
It was absolutely the worst purchase that I have ever made in my life. I've owned a Rigmaster, Pony Pack and Dynasys and the Dynasys is by far the best. -
This might be a little late as it is an older post, but in cases where room allows, the Tri Pak can be plumbed into the existing vents. For example, it won't work on a studio sleeper if you have the sofa, but will if you have the regular bed. Try calling Transport Rdfrigeration (Thermo King) in Green Bay Wi. They can give you a definate answer on your particular application.
