Grape ape. My data link has a 9 pin I have a pic if I can figure out how to get it loaded. Shop said something about a 9 to 6 pin cable. I was told the older systems used 6 then in mid 2000's switched to 9 pin. Is there a way to confirm that they used the j1587 protocol. I even asked at ford dealer and they didn't know looked at me like I was speaking a different language. Lol. I know its 20 yrs old but really.

I found my electrical system print for 3406c serial #4ck and next to the data link connection it has [J1587) listed. I had a friend print that from cat site when I first got the trk. Never thought of it till I looked at print. So I'm guessing code reader will work. Now just figure out if I need a adapter cable go from 9 pin to 6pin ??

Watching this thread,we just got a truck in with a 4CK ('94 T800) and I'm hunting down all the info I can find about it. It's the lone Cat in a fleet of Cummins ISX-equipped trucks.

Well its got codes 12 and 62. 12 is coolant level sensor fault and 62 coolant level warning. I got it to finally flash code by turning cruise switch on and holding down the set/resume switch. The sensor is 2 yrs old only I replaced when I got the truck it was out. As far as code reader the 9 pin plug matches the code readers plug but the data wires are in wrong position I think I could just move the pins to match all the code reader ports or I was told they make a conversion cable 9 to 6 pin. Its suppose to have J1587 protocol according to electrical print so scanners should be able to read it. Jpenn there is lots of info on this site and all over the internet. I've found repair manuals, fault code lists. Etc.

New coolant level sensor and all is good again. So far every prob I've had with sensors I've been able to get it to flash a code. Still looking at a scan gauge will update if I get it. They said if I buy direct I have 30 day money back guarantee so if it doesn't work I could return it.
