Engineers are not truckers... and truckers are not engineers, so no union local is likely to group the two together.
Whatever company you drive for determines if they are union or non-union. The driver doesn't get to "sign on" to any union if they are working for a non-union company.
Unions for truck drivers (dump, semi, van, flatbed, whatever) fall under the Teamsters union.
Not sure which locals are in your area... because you didn't list your area. -
Teamsters, well they represent non-truckers in certain trades, but the division you are interested in is here: http://teamster.org/divisions/building-material-construction-trade

Dump truckers need a union? The end of the world is near
Lonesome Thanks this. -
I have a friend in California who is in the operating engineers union and he drives a dump truck, among other things. But he is an employee driver aka company driver. If he was an O/O, according to federal labor law, the union would not be allowed to negotiate on his behalf.

Some heavy equipment operators are unionized and they may also sometimes operate a class 8 truck. Or at least be licensed to do so. I can't think of any truck operation that's unionized besides ABF or Yellow frt. I once was a teamster with a small co. We were on board with an offshoot local, not the main teamsters. I imagine there's some chem or fuel haulers that are union.

owner operators in certain areas still are dues paying members of the union, there are ways around what you speak of.

Most low bed drivers are in the operators union Atleast around here because a union operator is the only one allowed to move a machine, so this way the driver can load/ unload a trailer by him selffireman451 and Shaggy Thank this.
