In my experience they are relatively laid-back. As long as you GOAL and don't hit anything you'll be fine.

Shout out to all the drivers at S.S. Im in need of a little info regarding the orientation and training steps. I will be Leaving out 12-1-14 and I really want to know what Im getting myself into. How is the road trip? what can I practice on at home at a near by school? being that I'm fresh out of school I'm a bit scared up when thinking about all the real life backing into docks in between to rigs. Any info would be helpful from new grads/ ss drivers thanks.

Don't be scared. You'll be assigned a trainer and after 5 weeks will be able to back safely, if not always elegantly. They push a lot of orientation off on the individual trainers. So training is kind of uneven. They will dump a disorganized packet of info on you that they will not go over in detail. Read it thoroughly and review often, especially the section about extra pay. On the road test, watch your signs. On the Grand Rapids test there is a development that doesn't allow trucks; they won't tell you to turn off, want to make sure you are reading signs. The people are not uptight, especially in GR. Some of the Atlanta folks are, but Rosie who does their orientation is the ####. Don't study, just relax and make sure you can pass a hair drug test. ☺

Hey fraightpusher, I too live on LI and have been driving local Ltl for the last 4+ years. Where you plan on parking that Big rig when/if you come home? Just curious. That's one of the things that stops me from doing OTR, I live out on the East end in a small hilly town! ha ha keep us posted!:biggrin_25520:

That was a pain in the neck when I drove for SUSE. I am also in the Northeast. They don't have many drop lots. Sometimes you can drop an MT at a customer during home time. They let you bobtail home a short distance, fwiw. I never did turn in the "approved park location" form. It's kind of don't ask, don't tell... Until your rig gets towed, lol.

    crazeydude Thanks this.
