Progress indeed. Rumor has it thru the truck makers, that they will make the auto trans standard, and a manual trans a optional upcharge. They are tired of paying to replace a tranny thru bad synchros, or grinded gears, to the point of needing replacement, when a truck only has 150-200k on it.

Having driven a standard truck these last 2 weeks, I cant wait to get back into my automatic truck on monday.

Thought about going with this company. I currently drive with a sanitation outfit here in central Texas. They promised me the chance to drive the transfer trucks (Tractor trailers) running back and forth to the dump, but that never materialized, so I've been driving the straight truck collectors since it kept me local and around the family.

We could use the money though, and OTR seems to be where it's at. I've gotten spoiled by the automatics.

You work for MBI? Know a guy doing that from FTW to Itasca. Makes pretty good dough , but is bored running the same route 4-5 times a day. But it is steady which is ok right now.

Uhhhhhh, LaPurr ------- there ain't no "synchros" in most manual Big truck trannys.
Perhaps that's why you can't wait to get back into your "automatic truck" on Monday?

Besides, there are those who would consider your eagerness to go "automatic" as an indicator thatcha just can't handle the program.

Big truck truckers used to be noted for their skills ---- now-a-daze, it seems, ANYone can drive a Big truck.

    Me?
    An automatic transmission? :biggrin_25512:
    No thanx --- I'll pass.

    AfterShock..
I guess I should have worded that diferently if I had known you were going to look into it word for word. Some trannys still have synchros. The Straight 9 speed I rebuilt last year had them.

And I really dont care what anyone says, not everyone can drive a truck. I trained some "students". I kicked 4 of them out of my truck and told them to find another job cause they just couldnt handle it/make it. And that was in a automatic truck. Thats pretty much the time I decided to give up training, not to mention they pulled my training thing because I kicked them off the truck (yes at a terminal).

    Bartage..
PM aint got nothing to do with it really. Clutch brake being out of adjustment, and drivers just forcing it into gear, or not being able to float the gears right and grinding gears badly between shifts, or whatever.

I have only ever heard an automatic grind a gear once, and it was in my truck. Trying to rock the truck out of a ice patch..

    Words have meaning, LP.
    And that's a good thang, I think.
'Cause when I look at thangs "word for word" -- it's an indicator that I'm very interested in what'cher sayin'.
When I was on and over the road, they were available, but not real popular. Has that changed?
    Are they as durable?
I'd tend to think the synchros would wear rather quickly.
And kinda take the fun-0-floatin' the gears.
Is it true that floaing gears in a synchro trans isn't the best thing to do?

    Or should,
    ya reckon?
I was lucky, .... I only HAD to do that to two, and one on a road test.
Did any of those you booted thank you for doin' that?
    YeAH, mine neither.
    Did you get the,
This company already has the investment of company schooling that trainee received, -- are you absolutely positive you're willing to cost the company all that money -------
----- speech from the front office?
    I did ----- once.
They knew better than to ask me THAT question again.

    Interesting information, LP.
    Thanx! :salute::wave:

Isn't shifting gears a very minor part of being a Professional Truck Driver?

Your "eagerness" to get into your own truck and make a living for yourself in commendable. Don't let some old fart who thinks that updated technology is not trustworthy get you down. The simple idea that we humans are always developing something better is what sets us apart from the rest of the animals on planet earth.

Good luck on your career with USX....keep us posted.
