no driver out of school or with 6 months experience

Agreed... and what has changed so much in the last 10 years? They've gotten easier to drive, safer and have more creature comforts? I would love to see some of these new drivers today do my job back in the 70s and 80s when I was running the NY to CA turns with my partner, and especially backing up! What with the "power assist" and all! Hell if you couldn't back up you would develop some really big muscles!

I take most of these answers from the young drivers with a grain of salt... Driving a truck today is like driving a 4-wheeler.

At some point you may start to experience age discrimination. With 46 years driving, since most people start commercial driving at 21 or older that would make you most likely at least 67. When I was 30, I would never have hired someone over 60, now that I am 60 I know I was wrong as a 30 year old but I figure what goes around comes around. Not saying it is right, but I think you can expect it to occur at some point, and it probably happens sooner to people that show their age by being out of shape and in poorer health.

It would NOT surprise me if either the government or insurance companies put an age cap on all types of truck driving: OTR, regional, or local (LTL).

Commercial airline pilots have had an age cap for many years. I believe that it has been lifted from age 60 to age 65, NOT sure about this.

Personally, I do NOT agree with age caps. Perhaps I am showing my age.

Several years ago, a 74 year old Chinese man took down 2 muggers who tried to rob him in an elevator in New york City. The 74 year old Chinese man was a master practitioner of a Chinese martial art known as Wing Chun.

Yep, love the emotional responses . . . anecdotal exceptions aside, I'll take someone's recent 3 years as more qualified than someone who has 30 years of experience but hasn't driven for 10 years. At 67 years old my father has been driving for 50 years, doesn't mean he's a better driver than when he was 30. Think about it, the 30 + 10 year driver is over 60 now . . . EVERYTHING about the driving experience has changed in the past 10 years. Now, would I rather have a 60 year old driver that has been driving continuously? Yes, but if you're telling me he's taken 10 years off, I'll take the recent experience every time.

I'd be interested if someone can find a study showing the age/experience CMV drivers of fatal accidents. New drivers will obviously get in a lot of minor scraps, but its the fatalities that companies have to avoid.

I'm the first one to agree that drivers get the ###### end of the stick, it's not right . . . but if it takes 33 years to realize how the industry operates . . . who are you mad at? Teachers, truckers, nurses . . . they're all underpaid, but until the barriers of entry to each business gets more difficult, supply/demand dictates wages, etc. To quote the Godfather (actually Hyman Roth), "this is the business we chose".

So let's educate each other, and figure out how to gradually improve things. You may not like the answers currently, but I'm just telling you what the thought process is.
