Depends on what else I've done recently. If I hauled a load into that area for $2.50/mile and I can get out to a better freight area with that $1.85/mile lumber load then yes, I'll take it. Also depends on deadhead. If I can get a load for $2+/mile but I have to run 100 miles empty to get it vs. loaded now and the average for all miles stays up on par, then I'll haul it. Winter rates man, suck it up buttercup.

If your stuck in Oregon or Washington State you either get lucky, dead head out or take a load of lumber.

if he's finding lumber for $1.85 he's doing good.

last year it was $1.00. in the northwest.

i know 3 companies that haul steel, rebar, etc. for $1.80 out. lumber back. steel out. lumber back. parked for the weekend.

I have the answer. A company that pays its employees $0.44 cents per mile. They have hundereds of trucks and driver's that are TOLD what to do. No choice at all.

I actually threw this out there tongue in cheek, but now that we're here.
You unload and find a load 50 miles away. 410.00 for 220 miles.
    1 hour deadhead
2 hrs loading (if you're quick)
    4 hrs drive time.
    1 hr unload
8 hrs total/ 51.25 hr to the truck.
I don't do long haul. 400 mile radius, in the southeast (actually I don't haul lumber but it would be nice as an option) and I'm not talking about "bouncing " over to a better lane to get a load to LA. How is this profitable? The truck is tied up for a day for 410.00 gross.

Exactly!!! Usually you get a real good rate to a crap hole. Many times you can get another good rate to yet another crap hole and if your lucky one more time. Then you dead head out 600-800 miles and overall you've done good.

I was hauling pipe to Williston, ND this whole late summer and fall and the rate was good enough to dead head out 1,000 miles and get another one. You are correct 72express, you waste a LOT of time on these cheap short loads trying to get back to a better lane. Better to just hump it out of there quick.

I do this almost every week. It goes in a curtain van, so I don't have to tarp. It delivers less than a mile from where I park the truck. It's less than 10 miles to a way better paying reload to get me out of the house on Monday.

If I can get the lumber loaded on Thursday, throw the logbook in the sleeper & overnight it home, I can deliver & reload on Friday & leave out Sunday to deliver on Monday. That's an extra load, which equals extra $$$.
