Its not really a whole lot, 59 a day is what is alloted, so you arent taxed on 59 a day, however over the course of a year it can add up quick

Yup. 52 weeks x 5 days a week (assuming you do the work five and home two thing) =260 days worked (all of which would most likely fall under the per diem rate). 260 days x $59 = $15,340 that would be chalked up to per diem allowance rate.

It would be alright, there's freight over there, being home weekly you won't make a much. But it's possible

I spoke with Randy the other day, given my new turn of events at home with my wifes job, I dont have a choice but to stay out 2 weeks at a time for the forseeable future. Im not in the 3 week run that gets a week off, but I will stay out. I just hope its actually worth it and it doesnt end up like it did the past 2 times Ive stayed out and either get a crap load, or I break down

    Hey gunner,

I'm currently active duty in the Marines and will be retiring in a few years. I came across afew of your threads today and have been reading as much as possible while here at work. I'm seriously interested in trucking and just wanted to tell you to keep up the writing. I enjoy reading your experiences indeed. How was the transition out of the Marines into trucking? If you had a chance to do anything differently, what would it be? I'm currently at 16 years and debating on retiring at 20 or staying in till 22-24 ish years(possibly 30 if it was up to my wife lol). I'm thinking i should get out as soon as possible to get this new career started before i get older. Any thoughts? Thanks again for the advice and looking forward to joing the trucking industry.

Hey big guns, I was in the navy. Didnt like the idea of being shot at so the Marines was not for me. I only did 4 years, however I wish I woudlve done more. As far as staying in or getting out, im sure youll make the decision as to whats best for you and your family. Its a general consensus that former military do well as truckers because of the time away from family and loved ones is roughly the same. I cant say I would do anything different, I used my chapter 33 gibill for my cdl school, I researched different companies before I was settled on one. I knew I wanted to do flatbed, as that is what my grandfather did, I also know I want to eventually own my own truck and run under my own authority, although that is gonna be sometime off.
Everything in my thread here is truth as far as my experience goes, it can be different for everyone. If I was in your position, I would definitely retire at 20 just because id want something new to do.
