Anything over 45k you should be payed extra. That's just too much of a pain.

    Hurst Thanks this.

Are you being paid more to haul 48k vs say 47k?

If not I wouldnt do anything. I almost never haul over 44k and doing very well.

I hear ya Hurst. Lately more and more it seems a lot of the steel and lumber loads out there are "load to weight", so they are trying to get you as close to max gross as possible. I always tell them I'm almost empty on fuel, so that usually buys me another couple thousand pounds leeway. I have been getting lucky lately in finding light loads (15k to 20k), but those are the exception and not the rule it seems.

I do the same,.. particularly if they scale me before I get loaded. I tell em I'm down to 1/4 tank and I cant gross more than 45k. Though I can really scale just shy of 47k if I really had to.

My rate is set with the broker,.. so weather they load 43k or 46k on me,.. I'm paid the same. The shipper wants to max me out while I'm trying to get out of their as light as possible.

I've learned that a little bit of honey goes a long way. Even if I despise the pricks loading me,.. I play nice nice and pretend I care about what they need.

If they are serious jerks,.. I've gone so far as to top off with fuel before hitting the CAT scale knowing that would put me over gross, just to go back and make them remove product. Pretty rare,.. most of the time shippers try to work with me.

I pull a 53' step and dont do too much pipe or steal. Better rates hauling equipment and machinery.

1998 KW T800, M11, 13spd, 22.5 LP, 8 aluminum rims, no headache rack (securement in tool box), 48 Reitnouer all aluminum step with fixed 121" = 29,000 tare = 51,000. I added a headache rack and have collected a bunch of stuff to put in it but I can still scale 49,000.

The same setup with a T2000 and C15 is 2000 lbs heavier, most of that on the steers.
