T_Trucker, From my Experience on the OTR side it can be possible to make about 8-12 a week. I depends on how you run and where your loads go. I did the 4-5 week rotation based out of California and was home for about 4 days a month and had very little issues. Though the 1st week out was very low but the following weeks were greater in pay afterwards. Being a lease operator means you make money when you move and not when your at home. From my experience its best to get home by Thurs/Friday and then you can ether roll out on Monday or Tuesday. This way you can cover your basic needs when you get home and when you leave form you home of record.

When you start out on the Lease program your 1st week truck payment is 0 your 2nd weeks is 1/2 the following week and in the 3rd week your at the full rate. But this is the the deferred program.

It's going to entirely depend on your personal finances. December through February is the ebb of the yearly freight cycle, and it picks up in March. If you have the resources to supplement your trucking income to stay afloat for those months then I'd say you'll be OK. I'm not saying that we necessarily do poorly in those months every year, but the potential is there for freight income to be poor until the spring produce starts tightening up the truck to load ratio. So many folks start these leases with huge dollar signs in their eyes, no cash reserves, and a lifestyle that is difficult to support on a trucking income...

Just be realistic about what you need to support your life, and what it takes to be successful as a trucking business entrepreneur.

 

I was one of the drivers that was given the opportunity to lp and turned them down. Back then at the time of the lease you were given a choice of what truck you wanted and they would tell you the major maintainence history. Turns out they wanted to lease me a truck that had been in a rollover. I figured if they were so tricky about sneaking you a questionable piece of equipment they weren't worth doing business with. Just my humble opinion and possible warning to newbies.

 

That must have been quite some time ago... only been a trucker for one year too. While you can try to get into a used lease (and you have to ask for it,) the majority of lease trucks offered are straight off of the assembly line.

 

What are the chances of there being a Pete or KW (I know they aren't ordering any more KWs) available for flatbed? Also I was told if you lease for 3 months they will let you order a new one to lease. What type options do you have when you order one? Is it mainly just color and stuff or is there more than color?

 

Pretty good I'd imagine... because of the headache rack. When you order one, pretty much all the options are available, but there are limitations... for example, the wheelbase length. The further you get away from the standard equipment that Prime specifies, the higher your weekly payment will be.

 

Would a 13 speed be an option?
