You Shaffer guys are awful quiet. Must be because of all those F ed up delivery and pickup times, lol.
I was wondering what kind of miles you guys get on average. I know there are slow times of the year but for the most part what kind of miles do you guys see on an average week?
That big ol raise in January along with guaranteed detention pay might actually be enough to make me consider reefer again. I swore I wouldn't pull a reefer again but .51 cents and practical miles is extremely tempting, even for a mega carrier.
Shaffer Miles?

Awful quiet? that's because there's not too many of us here.. that's why they gave Shaffer a .04 CPM raise and Crete .02 CPM
Most people say... hey! if I can do dry van drop and hooks for .45 CPM at Crete, why would I want to deal with a reefer?!?!
I hear that all the time...
What they don't know is those drop and hooks are short runs most often.
Anyway I came here with less than a year experience and got .43 CPM and I go to .48 if I'm around Jan 1st.
As far as miles go I can't complain, I'm on an OTR 21 day out fleet and average 2800 miles when out 7 days. Until recently due to my truck breaking down over and over again, along with some bad weather.
The money is good for "OTR" but just like any other OTR company it isn't perfect.
Anyway I will say this.. you will find many people down talking Crete or saying they can't get miles at Crete... how many threads/posts do you see that about Shaffer?
Not many if any at all.
They seem to care more about Shaffer drivers I think because well... people don't want to do Reefer when they can do Dry Van for about the same pay.
Here's my list of good and bad...
Good:
- Longer runs most often, for example my last 3 loads are from Mass to Iowa, then Iowa to Indiana and then Indiana back to Eastern Mass, next will be Vermont to get me a load home to Knoxville, TN
- The money/miles is good when you compare it to other OTR companies
- Health Insurance is only $25 a week for personal $1000 deductible
- Extra pay for loads under 200 miles on top of your .50 CPM or so but I rarely get short loads
- Most shippers are drop and hook here with the reefers
- Have extra time on your appointment? TALK to them, they'll help and see if you can T-call load and bring it early.. I've done it many times.
- You can bring the truck home and they don't pay attention to extra farting around miles you might do
- Most of the trailers are new
- Easy to get referrals, it's fun being in a door next to a Stevens and CR England driver knowing you make .20 CPM more than them lol
The negative...
- Tons of Northeast runs, yes you'll leave the Northeast but you won't be gone for long!
- Cheap Frightshakers
- It's reefer so that means screwed up sleep schedules to make crazy appointment times, not all the time but enough to piss you off lol.
- They're anal about time off, you better not take more than 4 days off in a row no matter how long you've been out working.
- Truck breakdown? They will try anyway possible to shuttle you somewhere to swap out trucks so you don't waiting to be fixed and get paid for it. If you turn down switching trucks you're off breakdown pay.
- You will be a number here
There's BS everywhere though, you WILL make money here and that's what it's all about. -
Long haul to IA. I ran Balt-SEA, and sometimes ANC. Now Anc to Balt is LONG HAUL!! Paid 4300 miles 1 way, took 18 days and the pay was awesome. Makes you homesick after 15 days and you are still in Canada.

Shaffer is a lot more though
oh btw.. 18 days for 4300 miles? lol that's 240 miles a day buddy. Kiddies coming out of CDL school working for Werner pull more miles a day than that -

Thanks for for your contribution but I prefer to hear from Shaffer drivers, that's why its posted in the Shaffer section.RookieJ1987 Thanks this. -
Ok freightwipper, first of all thanks for your time!
Second, I keep hearing all the complaints from Crete drivers and now you about the so called "cheap" trucks. Arent they Cascadias? Do they have vinyl seats, with no power windows and such? Do all of the storage compartments in the sleeper have nets instead of doors? What exactly makes them "cheap", I'm just curious?
