You guys are giving him WAY too tough of options (too much work and thinking involved). It appears to me that all the OP wants to do is hit a button, and stare at a screen while he steers his truck.

Really? You come on a GPS thread and go old school on me. Do you miss your ox?

Maybe I need to clarify. I know how to trip plan, I know how to use an atlas, heck can you believe I even know how to add up miles. All I'm asking is if there is a GPS that allows custom routing. Literally, that is all I was asking.

+1 on the Trip Planner feature on the Garmin. My company gives me my route and fuel stops--often not exactly the way the GPS automatically selects--and I use "browse map" to program the whole trip in before I leave the yard.

This is a huge advantage over the Rand McNally which pretty much gives you only two choices. Take it or leave it.

I have a Rand RM510... I'll just add "vias" until it has the route I want to run. Cheyenne to Dallas would be adding intermediate destinations like Lamar CO, Amarillo TX, Childress TX and Bowie or maybe Decatur TX to force the routing down US287. Basically you just add waypoints along the route you want to take until the routing algorithm gives in to you. The Rand allows me to save these trips that I use frequently, so I just add the final destination to the saved routing. I'm sure you can find the same features in a Garmin unit.

Will it give total miles to Dallas from Cheyenne or just to the next waypoint?

Your Garmin should let you select total miles also, instead of just to next waypoint, just tap on the icon that shows your remaining mileage and it lets you change it to numerous different things

I tried that but it never shows the miles or time, it's just blank. Maybe mine was made before they put that in there.
