it's not bad (somewhat) for us older folks who have nothing to look forward to but retirement. but the younger generation. that's the time to be home with friends and babies growing up.

granted, there's local. but around these parts, the wages still suck. 7 years after the economy tanked. still a long way to go to get where they once were. and the sad thing about it. minimum wage is about to catch up to what local trucking companies are paying.

Every male member of my family has a cdl and has driven at one point. Dad, brother, cousins and uncles on both sides of my family. At one point me, dad and brother all drove for the same company.

Good pics.... The O'l K100 reminds me of my 1973 K100, same color too. My heart is behind the wheel still and although I still pull a RGN from time to time it does not satisfy the lust for just being out there. Unfortunately it will never be like it was 20-30 years ago. Hope to retire from this job with good retirement and then, who knows......

I dont know if its "in my blood", but my dad has a Class B CDL.

Dad has worked in trucking equipment all of his life. Fabricating on utility bodies, dump beds, pto systems, DOT lighting on flatbeds, he has devised several work around systems for PTO systems and the hydraulics. Made shop foreman, then shop manager then into sales and service.

I started off delivering pizza at age 18 till I was 21 and being a car porter at a car dealership.

I used to move brand new truck bobtails from the storage lot at his old work in Riverside, MO down the road to the shop to be worked on. I'd park them right in front of the service bay doors. All I had was a Class E chaueffers license in Missouri. That was the real start to my career as a truck driver. I also rode in several big trucks my dad drove for work growing up as a kid. So i had somewhat of a trucking fascination.

I ran independent courier with my own car for 2 years in Kansas City.

I delivered tuxedos to the stores out of a sprinter van for AfterHours Formalwear for a year.

Then i went to work for Iron Mountain. Drove a 16' box truck and a 26' box truck.

Went to college a few years later and got a degree which turned out to be useless.

Got my Class A last November.
Been behind the wheel of a semi ever since.

My dads brother drove OTR for about 3 months but couldnt put the bottle down. smh.

As a kid I was always fascinated with trucks... my parents bought me trucks to play with and I did. One of my friends in the neighborhood his dad was an O/O in mid 80's. He took me for a ride in his KW K100 cabover, I was hooked! I thought this was awesome! Few years later my uncle got his CDL and he would come by the house n visit... i rode quite a few times with him & his Schneider 55 mph cabover fell back in love with it again after missing some school and going on a quick 1,2, or 3 day trip! Got a lil older seen him change companies then to conventional tractors.. i joined the air force after high school did my time & I didn't want to re enlist so I thought what can I do? I just can't go back home n get some job... i then decided trucking that's it! Did my research before I discharged. I've been trucking going on 12 years. Ive done OTR, regional, local, van, curtainside, tank & reefer. It's just in my blood! I don't know what else to do, lol Its a love/hate thing for sure. Gotta find what makes you happy, that lil niche' that feels right. Luckily my 2nd wife to be her dad was a trucker! So she knows how this works & we make it work! We enjoy our time apart & have a great time when we're together. I only stay out bout 5-6 days, yall can keep weeks being gone. I've paid my dues! Lol

I'm a first generation driver, but I know this is my calling. When I was 15, I responded to a add in my local paper from a farm needing drivers, and I've been hooked on it since.

I love my job because I love working alone. There's nothing better than being alone and getting paid 12 hours a day. Also it's a very zen kind of thing to drive long distances. It becomes to where you are not so much working, as it is work is just getting done and you are present while it's happening. For me I just get in the truck and go, and then 3 hours later I arrive to my destination. Like it's nothing. The hardest part is showing up to work and staying awake in the middle of the night.
