hi can anyone tell me about the rule when you have hazmat with placards on and have to unplacard before you back into dock ands its unloaded because the trailer is considered an extension of the dock therefore deosnt need the placards anymore. is this legal in the dots eyes?

I'm not familiar with that rule. I've always retained my placards during unloading.
Hell, you never know when the dock may catch on fire. And you feel a sudden urge to statch yourself away from it.
I'm not saying it's not a rule. But, I don't recall ever reading it. -
I would think, until that load is physically removed from the trailer. Its still considered a hazmat load. Like danc694u said, if that trailer were to catch fire at the dock. The fire dept would know it is a hazmat load on arrival.....

I can't find anything in the DOT book on it - but I may be looking in the wrong place.

My personal opinion is to leave it placard UNTIL you are empty. If you ever delivered mail, the people on the dock will tell you that YOU are responsible for the load until it touches their dock. If it's in your trailer, I would say it is still your responsibility. If something bad happens, how would the response team know which trailer to do what with? That doesn't even sound to acceptable. What does it hurt to wait? It's going to take the same amount of time whenever you do it.

More detail (by a good bit) - but essentially my position.
By the early argument, I could be fully loaded and leave whenever I darn well please, because the load is still 'technically' on the dock...
On the other hand - I've run into many sillier rules. I'm just asking Cybergal for a reference so *I* can point to it when this comes up again (and we all know it will) -
You did not make yourself clear...where you told by reciever to unplacard before backing up ? I have never been told that. Recievers could care less and very seldom ever see placards on trailer. Besides the reason for placards is to make others aware of what is on trailer, so as long as the trailer is loaded you are responsiable for having trailer placard not the receiver. It there ever was a problem it would be your butt in trouble not receiver. I personally never take them off to I pull away from dock to shut my doors. Bottom line ...ITS YOU THAT ARE RESPONSIABLE FOR HAVING TRAILER PLACARD...NOT RECIEVER OR SHIPPER...ONLY THE DRIVER.

when i haul haz i leave placards on til im empty... mainly because im still responsable until i have signed bol's in my hand saying reciever has taken control of shipment always better safe then sorry.

OK Heres' how I understand this......
Once the trailer is unloaded then the placards should be removed.
But it is considered an extension of the dock.
As far as documentation, I've never seen anything in writing either.
This information is handed down to us by the supervision above.
