That's all you need. KY used to require a KY number on the truck, but stopped that some time before we got in business in 2011. They cross reference from the DOT number now. And they do check it. I got a $165 lesson on the KYU online vehicle inventory update process when I put a second new to me truck on the road. Driver got a clean inspection at a coop, but got a "miscellaneous local ordinance" violation for the truck not being listed on my KYU account, despite the fact that I had one in good standing otherwise. One more thing to add to the truck changing checklist.

Funny thing, I also put the last 8 of the vin number on, even though the only state I'm aware of that requires it is CO, and we don't go that far west. I did it because every other time I go in for service or parts, they ask for the vin. Much easier to look outside and read it off the side of the truck than dig it out of my smarter than me phone.

I think I read somewhere that the US DOT was working toward consolidating the MC and DOT numbers to just the DOT number. Apparently has some substantial system integration required due to the cobbled up mess of Federal databases that exist to track and tax every aspect of this industry. So that change might be a while yet.

There might be a few states where an intrastate carrier might still need to display a state mc number, or just that. I don't know for sure. I know my home state of GA requires intrastate carriers to get a US DOT number and that's all they need to display on the truck, not the GA number. My Dad runs a Chevy Kodiak to deliver product he sells (private carrier). His truck is lettered up with only the company name, location, and DOT number. No IFTA sticker and not an apportioned plate. He goes out of state so infrequently that he buys trip and fuel permits when needed. The product he hauls is equipment and non-hazardous asphalt maintenance products like hot pour joint sealer.

Per compliance folks @ this company, Oklahoma is occasionally ticketing for no vin on the truck at a couple of scales.
