yeah I have run up 52 to avoid the congestion in summer then on past Poplar Camp into Wytheville. Now coming down back in the day I can see where your coming from. Old hands used to run down to avoid the NC scales. They said accidents were common back then and a lot of trucks got away down old 52.

I have seen drivers take the run away ramps before. I have also seen drivers that should have taken it and didn't. I don't get excited about grades like I use to. It isn't that I have gotten lax in respecting them, I just know the limits of the trucks I drive. It has to get over 9% grade to get me all excited if I have not been on that road before. I had the joy of taking a truck with no engine brakes down Eisenhower on I-70 for two days straight with a trailer. It isn't fun, but it can be done without issue.
This is what you get when you don't use the run away ramp in the mountains.

Nope Big Don used to hear somebody sing it coming or going across through there . Not so much anymore these days. Back in the day when everyone had a CB and kept their "ears" on. Before subscription radio you'd be going up or down and hear some hand sing a verse or two for fun. Probably made it up as they went. LOL . Pretty creative

Hi plow boy, years ago, on the cb, there was some guy, not sure where he was, but he was running a lot of power, sang a song about " the local 76". It was extremely derogatory, but hilarious and really well written. You could hear him for miles.

Well, I once heard one about Pancho who lived on the rancho, and came home to Lucy (and I ain't gonna go any further than that!)

Once late at night, this guy must have been going the same way I was, because someone asked for a "10-36", and this guy went on and on for miles, I forget most of it, but he said something about he had a watch in his toolbox, with a lock that he couldn't find the key, then found the key, described all the things in the toolbox, finally getting to the watch, which was a fine pocket watch his grandaddy gave him, it was a beautiful watch, it went on for miles, then he finally says, "I'm sorry, as nice of a watch as it is, I forgot to wind it, I can't give you your 10-36. I LMAO.
We had so much fun with the CB radio back then.
Big Don Thanks this.
