how is the galaxy 939 an illegal radio?

 

the 939 is not illegal it is a standard 11 meter cb radio! A ham radio, 10 meter or other modified for 11 meter is illegal!

 

How do you know it's hams doing it? There's a lot of CB operators with big amps that get on various channels....and when skywave propagation sets in, you can even hear them all over the country.

Very true, the 939 is indeed legal....until you modify it with either extra channels or more power. Then it loses FCC certification.

 

All this hullabaloo about the rules and power output...

All I have to say about that is... Part 95 was written in the 1950s. The times have changed drastically since the 1950s, so is it not unreasonable to say Part 95 ought to be revised for modern times? 4 watts is outdated.

 

Believe it or not, 4 watts can go a long ways, the problem is/was everyone wants to do a "one up on the next guy", and so that's why we have what we have today. Sort of like the speed limit....set it at 50 and everyone wants to go 55 or faster....so lets make it 60, now all the sudden they all want to go 65 or faster...should CB be more than 4 watts? Maybe now so....but even if it was moved to 100 watts, it wouldn't be long until 100 watts wasn't good enough and CBers would want more power....sad but true.

However the FCC is not going to change the 4 watt rule. In fact I'm almost willing to bet CB already has more power than some of the other non licensed required radio frequencies....for example MURS is limited to 2 watts, and I forgot what FRS was at, but I'm pretty sure it's under 2 watts.

If anything, CB IMO should have been moved from 27 MHz AM, to a VHF band, on FM....you'd have clearer reception, you could run shorter antennas and still have max range, etc...and you wouldn't have all the skywave propagation issues....yeah I know they tried this in '73 and it was shot down....they shoulda went with it.....

 

The galaxy dx939 is not a ham radio, it comes stock at 4 watts, but with a simple tune can hit 30 watts, no ssb, can not operate outside of CB frequency unless modified, to the OP QUESTION the 939 is a nice CB radio, for a descent price, Amazon had it for under $160.00 with free shipping, Sorry for the uprising of a dead threat, didn't see the date until after I posted

 

It goes back to the saying, it just depends n what you want to achieve. I have run a 939 over two years trouble free. Originally Clays Radio did a p&t and at top it would modulate up to about 22 watts. Only other thing added was modulation boost whatyoucallit thing put in to raise it up to about 112%. Later, I had to have it detuned on the low side to 31/2 watts to run a 3 pill. Funny how your question turned into a free for all for the chicken littles, tech experts and the ones the can't get through the ch 19 jungle. Good luck on what ever you end up going with.
