You and me both. I start to get impatient even when I'm stuck waiting on a driver who can't hit the broad side of a barn backing up.
How long do you wait...?

Being a governed driver I'm going to toss my two cents in and then

I was always taught that when passing, if you just want to go faster, pass them on the left. If they are holding up traffic, use the right.
I have gotten behind a few slower people before, I'll admit it's irritating when it's impeading traffic. At the same time I also realize that there may be something they know about the area that I dont know.
Since I know I'm in a governed rig I stay in the rightmost two lanes with rare exception. All I ask is that you don't flash me repeatedly saying "get the hell out of my way!" or blow my doors off.
Oh, and if for some odd reason I'm in the "fast lane" I can assure you I have good reason... Like passing another rig that can't keep his lane. -
To no one in particular, I just wanted to be clear- I don't tailgate, nor do I sit there flashing my high beams.... I just tend to give the benefit of the doubt and wait a few seconds to see if a driver looks back, notices me oncoming, and does what I consider to be the courteous thing and gets over to the right. I dunno, I was always taught coming up (years ago, back when most truckers still gave a shot, about themselves as well as others) that to just haul gas wide open on the right side without giving the rig in front of you at least a chance to give way was an ashhold way of driving.
But a lot of y'all have valid points; nowadays, a lot (if not a majority even) of "truckers" don't give a fudge about anyone else, so why give a fudge about them, eh?
Ah, the love of truckin' in 2014.....
Shaggy Thanks this. -
I typically get more respect from 4-wheelers than I do from other drivers.

I just stay in the right lane and putt along at 62. Anyone that wants to is welcome to pass. I'm working on my big, fat, quarterly fuel bonus.
Mudguppy and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
Up front, I'm still the nfg. Only been driving commercially for 4 months. However, being older than most I've been a few places and done a few things. That said., I have to ask where is the professionalism and courtesy in this industry? I know my pos truck is governed so I stay out of the way. I always clear drivers when they're around me. Maybe 1 in 5 acknowledge it. Invariably if I move over to let Mr long nose steel body on the highway, he hangs me out in the middle lane and blows by on the right. I can't believe it has always been this way. And while I'm on a roll. .. You other new guys, get rid of the flip flops, sweat pants, and wife beater shirts. If you want to be treated with respect look like you deserve it. Lastly, if your girlfriend is too fat to walk to the parking lot, leave her big fried chicken eating butt at home. I will have you towed next time I wait 45 minutes while you're parked on the drive line waiting for her.
Just a new guys observations.Mudguppy Thanks this. -
Well, to answer a few things....At least to the best of my abilities....I'm well into my 40th decade on this planet, and no things weren't always this way....I'd say things have been getting much worse the past 8-10 years as far as respect/courtesy/professionalism goes. Sorry you didn't get to see more of the "glory days" as it were.
Now, I drive a daycab Pete, hauling dedicated OS/OW for a local company. I may be the exception to the rule, but I always give a driver that lets me on the Interstate the option to merge back over ahead of me. 9 times out of 10, they just stay in the middle for several miles (even after I flick the lights). So, my options are- a)stay back in the right and hold to his/her speed, b) merge behind them in the middle and hope they THEN merge back to the right to let me pass (Yea, riiiiight), or c)hammer down and ride on by on the right. Nowadays, I'll take option c!
As for the acknowledgment....Hell, there's plenty of times I flick my lights after passing just in case a driver "cleared" me, since I was busy watching my other mirror to make sure I wasn't encroaching in the other lane. I may be an exception to the rule, but I always thank drivers who are courteous to me.
Anyhow, y'all stay safe out there..... -
For me, it depends on the situation as to what lane I run in. If I'm empty, I'll try to stay in the right lane. If I'm loaded, I'll be in the second lane. The front to back surge makes sudden braking dangerous and the side surge makes sudden lane changes dangerous. I run 5 over the posted limit, if I'm in the second lane and you want to go faster, change lanes and have at it, if I see you coming up in my mirrors and I have room, I'll move over and let you pass, but if I dont have room to move over and back, well, move left and go on your way. The way I see it, I'm already running over the posted limit, if you feel the urge to run even faster, it's your wallet and your points, jump out in that left lane and go.
Oh, and I'm numbering lanes by through lanes. If the right lane is going to be turning into an exit ramp in five miles, it's not a lane, it's an off ramp and I'll stay out of it
If I'm in a city I'm not familiar with, ALL right lanes are exit ramps. To many times I've been trapped over there and had to fight my way over to stay on the highway. Don't blame me for that, blame the morons that designed the road that way. The right lane should ALWAYS be the right lane!Vilhiem and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
more of that ME ME ME attitude running amokFlybynight041 and Hammer166 Thank this.
