Plus, most companies ask if you popped up positive on any drug test for any other trucking company. Most trucking companies use the same testing facilities, so all they have to do is put your SS number in the system. Then you have the random drug tests. So far I had 4 randoms. If you can't stay clean you might have issues in this line of work. And in flatbed it's so easy to get hurt. The last thing you want is to be buzzed while trying to tarp a load. You fall off and hurt yourself then it's a done deal.

Does E.W. Wylie hire student drivers? Last time I spoke with a recruiter, they required at least 1 year OTR. Has this changed recently?

You need a year of driving experience. They aren't taking student drivers.

Well, EW Wylie does have great equipment, & fairly good pay. But, let me advise anyone that is thinking about a job with EW Wylie that they are not all that in a bag of chips. Let me rebut all the good things this guy had to say about it by sharing my experience with u. First off, if u get injured on the job there, Jen An der son is NOT a nice person to deal with. Except on orientation day when she's up their impressing u with her charm- don't be fooled. She is the safety advisor/ manager there- I don't like her. Secondly, EW Wylie will only put u in the hotel if your truck is in the shop for maintenance overnight. They will make u sleep in your truck, even if it is subzero temperatures outside. And believe u me, Fargo can get bone chilly cold. During Orientation u sleep in the motel. And thirdly, but not the least important is the fact that they micro manage your route to save on fuel. And trust me, if u go off route- they do not like it. And u will be hearing from your driver manager. I didn't like the questioning attitude of one of the lead drivers there, nor his condescending attitude. That's the one that is former Navy. Sorry, but I know how to manage my own route without a driver manager that just graduated from college with a degree in basket weaving. I can manage that on my own- thank you very much Karen M. It's an ok company for maybe some people- I didn't care for it. That old timer who works the front desk is another with a condescending attitude too. She acts like she runs the company there and signs your paycheck. Another thing is that u will not get paid for your down time on your truck maintenance or checks on it. So, u will lose money doing that. No, after I got a permanent injury while doing my job there at EW Wylie, I'll never do flatbedding again. Their treatment of their drivers who get injured on the job was appalling to say the least. And if u see any other complaints of work related injuries while working at EW Wylie- take them seriously, because I didn't & I should've of.

I strongly urge u to consider another company other than EW Wylie. They are not a good company. Just saying - trying to save u the heartache.

In December I was having issues with my truck as an O/O and was trying to return the truck to the dealer to work something out maybe? Paying for the repairs wasn't the issue it was the fact the truck was turning out to be a lemon. Instead of working it out they tried to repo the truck and I ended up stuck in Las Vegas. The timing was strange but E.W. Wylie called me that same day. I told them what was going on and they said they can hire me back and get me a rental car so I can be at orinatation Monday. they still had all my info so I didn't need my documents. This was a Friday in Las Vegas and finding a cab took like 5 hours. Under a normal situation I wouldn't of went back with them. But I would of had a whole lot of headache trying to get a cab, rental car, and hotel on my own. So I went back to Wylie at lease until I can get another truck. I was hoping that OTR side of things were a bit better. Well What I can say is some things got better at Wylie and some things are just the same or worse.
    1. Starting in March 2015 pay is now every week instead of every two weeks.
    2. More new equipment for OTR. The older beat up trucks are still being sent to the regional fleet. Wylie are buying mostly Volvos and those garbage Pro Stars with the super singles which sucks in the snow. I hate the prostar I'm in because the APU is under the bunk and has the vent door on the side. When the temperatures drop -10 with the windchill down in the -20s all that cold air comes inside and having the heater on full blast don't do nothing. You guys might be more resistant to the cold but as a female I was freezing. I had requested another truck for this reason. Their answer "Park against the wind". ooookay. After I tried everything out of desperation I went to Cabelas and brought a indoor safe propane heater that had a low O2 sensor and I brought a C02 detector as a back up. If the truck was allowed to idle I wouldn't of had to go through this.
    3. If you want to lease purchase you are going to get an older truck. They don't offer newer trucks or have trucks that are just for lease purchase. They have warrenty on them now but I wouldn't do it.
    4. I wouldn't do Texas regional right now. They have some sort of pipe contract in Houston and the yard is more full with trailers than a rest stop at midnight. It can take an hour just to park because there is just NO ROOM.
    5. There is some sort of favoritism going on because they kept me up in the Arctic zone (ND,SD,MT,IA) the whole winter! I know you have to work in the winter but ####! I know it had to be other work South of I-80. I also found out gloves don't keep my hands warm at all in below zero temperatures. After spending nearly $300 in gloves inculding the heated kind, once again I went to Cebelas for a solution. The only thing that worked was their 1,000 grain thick mittens with the 3 hand warmers inside. Dexterity suffered with the mittens and securement took longer but it was better than going inside the truck every 30 minutes in unbearable pain waiting another 30 minutes for my hands to warm up. I suffered this winter.
I had some personal stuff pop up and I took a leave of absence in April. Now everyone is wondering when I'm coming back. I had brought another truck from a private seller my brother-in-law sister refered me to. The truck is getting some stuff fixed. In the mean time I'm waiting for all the paperwork stuff to get done, and I getting call backs from carriers to lease on to. I can't go back to being a company driver. The people at E.W. Wylie are nice, and they have the potential to be a really good company but they still need to work on certain things otherwise people will keep on leaving.

Don't Dare get injured at E.W. Wylie and tell them about it. There was a driver who broke his heel falling off a flatbed because of the ice in December. Because of the workman's comp. rules he had to get all of his treatments in Fargo. This guy lives in Texas and he hasn't been home. Since. From what I heard he can't go home to get treated because they want to make sure he is "following the doctor's orders". This guy stays at the hotel and returns to the Wylie office everyday.

Hey reddove... It's been a long while since you posted anything here. I'm wondering if ur still with Wylie and how that's going. I live in northern MN and see their trucks here some, so I'm wondering about them.

I had decided to leave Wylie and now I'm an O/O with a 2017 Volvo T780. I still get calls from recruiters. They had called me when I was started up again and I told them I had my own truck now. They had said they aren't hiring O/O's with their own trucks right now. Lol
