I know it was an old thread but id like throw in if i was going to start with a company id still try to get decent money,, Transport America starts you at .35 and averitt at .37.
I like them because they are regional out of my area, but then I know they have their negative sides ... but these days .28 is rather low especially to be out 2 weeks at a time.

Star pays 32 cents an hour now.... I am thinking about them since I am near Morton and can park the tractor at the terminal instead of trying to find a place in downtown Peoria when I am home.

I drive by there everyday almost... The trucks look nice. The offices and parking lot look like they belong in a ghetto.

The 5 office workers I saw dress like they make $8 an hour so I doubt they are being paid well. The truckers aren't probably much better off.

I talked to a recruiter named Marcus and he had me come in to apply. I got on their computers and the two they had me use both had some serious bugs. Marcus' computer wouldn't even go to the company webpage for me to apply and the guy in the next cubicle let me use his computer. I put in my name and it instantly bypassed a lot of questions and straight into some post-hire documents. So, the people on here who are saying the computer system is always crashing is a statement I can verify. It is probably hard to dispatch drivers when your computer doesn't work.

I have studied business, economics, and many other subjects... This company is not having any money reinvested into it at all. This is one of those places that is licking the bottom of the trash can for something to eat. I can tell how poorly the staff is paid, by how aged and unkempt the property is. I bet the parking lot has had a pot hole filled since it was first laid in the 1950's.

I will say the trucks look to be in good condition. Maybe Star only dumps cash into the tractors and trailers and saves on office workers and property upkeep. But, then what kind of mechanics are they going to have ?... What kind of hotel are you going to be staying in when you break down on the road ?...

I went to orientation at US Xpress... man it was a world of difference. If you saw a star truck sitting next to a US Xpress truck at a rest area, you wouldn't know the difference between the two companies... but if you visited the US Xpress terminal in Markham, IL and the Star Trucking HQ in Morton you would easily see the difference in how these companies run...

Based on my observations of staff and facilities... Star Trucking is like that used car lot in the ghetto with the parking lot full of oil spots and 15 year old rusted out pieces of #### for sale and US Xpress would be a real Ford dealership with new cars in the lot. If that puts things into perspective.

I am waiting on a court date before US Xpress hires me on... but Star Trucking seems to be some kind of subsidiary for Swift... After I got my application put in. I was given a number to call and it was Swift's safety department. So the rumors of Star being some kind of red headed step child of Swift is also true.

The trucks did look nice... They had about 8 of them in the yard when I was there.

Star is now a Swift lease/op... they're leasing their equipment from Swift and I believe operating under Swifts authority ... running their own customer base.

So does that mean you can stop in at Swift terminals and have their shops do repairs ?

Like any other L/O at Swift, where they get their truck maintained would be their call. If you are driving for Star, you get your truck repaired where Star wants you to.
