youre right the mainstream media does tend overplay the effects of cheap or expensive gas on consumers. Most people don't burn enough gas to amount to much of a big deal but they need a story to sensationalize.
Owner operators and commercial consumers of fossil fuels are the ones who really see their fortunes rise. Indirectly this can have further positive effects on retail consumers as well as the cost of producing and transporting finished goods drops. -

My last gas on 12-30- 2014 cost me $1.889 per gal at Roadrunner east of State Line Exit at Texarkana.

The waitress and the owner of Red Lobster, because they made another sale they wouldn't have made if he was buying your expensive gas. And, that money spent will keep working it's way through the economy as you keep mentioning.
Who will be unhappy? All the foreign oil producers whose products we are buying more cheaply. Well, them and you.OldHasBeen, Eninety2 and DriverToBroker Thank this. -
