Hi! My husband (34) just finished school at a local technical college, with a Class A cdl plus tankers. He got an A in the class and the trainers commented often about how he's a great driver (for a newbie). After 15 years working for a dealership, he's ready for a change. He's got a clean driving record, no trouble with the law, is neat, professional, healthy (doesn't smoke, doesn't drink) and a very hard worker. He's super picky about safety as well.
He's applied to two companies now and both rejected him. First was a small flat-bed company that said they can't hire any more from our area. Understandable. So he went with his second choice, TMC, and they also said no (no explanation.)
Does he need to be more persistant? Would sending a professional resume and cover letter help? He just used each company's online application.
Now we're not sure where to look. From all the negative posts you find, you find just as many positive. We live about 15 miles north if I-94. Maverick wouldn't even look at him due his location. It seems Roehl and Schneider's pay just isn't there. Millis will make him go through their training program which makes his schooling pointless (they have a contract if you leave where you need to pay $$ back, the school is unpaid, costs $500 down, etc). . Crete will only take grads if from a pdti approved school..the tech college he went to is not pdti certified (Chippewa Valley Technical College). He'd like his own truck that he can bring home.
He'd love to find a home weekly route, but we're okay with him going OTR for a year or so until he gets more experience.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
~ Deb

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Who's hiring newbies from western wisconsin? Rejected by TMC.

Professional resumes will not help. Unless he is looking for an office job.
A simple app will do.
There are sites online where he can apply at multiple companies.
Be aware, the more restrictive he is on his choices. The fewer returns he will receive.
Clicking ALL works rather well in a new driver case.
While I'm not sure what the rate of pay is for Schneider. It's not going to be much better regardless of where he goes. -
Have him call Arrow Trucking out of Tulsa, OK. They have a yard in Masery, OH. I have been with them 7 months and overall I am happy. Pay is good and the miles are there. Your treated like a number but I am ok with that as long as I am making money and get paid on time. OTR he will be out 3-5 weeks at a time. Regional, home every 7 days with 2 off but the money is not as good regional. If he decides to give Arrow a shot have him use me as a referral if you dont mind. Good luck.

We live about 15 miles north of I-94, 35 miles east of Hudson. A local route would be great...
Thanks for the Jeff Foster tip..we'll check that out. Some others he's looking at now are Transport America and Monson. Does anyone know if Monson will make him go through their school with a contract, too (like Millis)? Is it unpaid (or you have to pay $$ down?). He sent an email to Monson. -
Good Luck to you Husband hope he finds a job I know it is hard for a newbie
-
maybe try a more local company like a tanker for a gas station rig just might work until you get experiance. or offer to help with the insurance
-
Jeff Foster is hiring only experienced drivers Looks like a nice outfit, though.
I appreciate all of the replies
