Can an owner operator be a trainee?
What I mean is can a newly licensed driver purchase a truck, hire an experience driver and team drive with him to earn experience? Or is the only way for experience is to sign with a Co. that does that?

    Thanks

Yes, you can, just need to find a good experienced driver.

There are only a few Companies that may hire a student driver. Reason being, insurance will not underwrite with less than two years driving experience. Contact a Company that hires student drivers. While also hiring O/O. (i.e. ask that Company your What If Scenario, since they will do the direct hiring.). Separately, you can always hire an experienced driver (That is more than 2 years driving experience) and get the Insurance on your own equipment. That is as close as any knowledgeable person maybe to the subject, without direct Hire capability may answer your question

No, the co-driver will not legally be able to operate the truck. Only if, the truck has non-trucking liability...nothing business related. Status: Not-For-Hire

As the O/O (w/ operating Authority) are you saying that I would not be able to be insured as a in training operational employee? Not to be funny, but it sounds to be a bit rigged. I would like to have driving experience as the company owner/employee for the purposes of need if I had to move the truck. Are we saying I can own the co. but not drive? I have a few people I know that are Truck owners that are not truck drivers. I just want to experience of owning and operating.

I've never had anybody drive with me and show me how to drive. So yes, find an experienced driver, by your truck get insurance, and get at it. The insurance on you might be very expensive, but yes you can definitely do it.

We all do, what we must to survive; There are a very few Carriers whom are able to hire students. Not from some greater sense of ethics. I myself fall within this category, i have experience that Corp.'s yearn for by a Trainer. When working under my own authority I possessed a Safe Safety Rating. I have the credentials for 2 million safe miles. Finding an Insurance Company that will allow me to hire a student...myself, i couldnt find one. You state...bro bought a truck & works it with experienced driver. I know the ABC's...i read post...but u know what u were told by another party, whom states...they all know: We all do, what we must to survive...ethics!

What i'll concede is: Commercial Vehicle Inspector, will look and examine all reference points:

    a), Check drivers license
    b), Proper class,
    c), Not restricted,
    d), Not expired
    e), Current medical card
f), Driver shows proof of certification by carrier to operate the equipment
    g), Carrier is properly licensed
    h), Truck & trailer's registration current
    i), IFTA current
j), Insurance not expired on both trk & trailer
k), Each unit is properly marked
l), Each unit has current annual inspection

However, on making interpretations...the DOT man, will not state, "this driver is not underwritten by the insurer to operate this equipment".

You'll get away with it, until the time the inexperienced driver is involved in an accident and then when your insurer needs to pay out a claim.

    That is all i'll concede...
