Elogs and paper at the same time

We all know it's illegal to run two separate logs. That's a given.

I do question running two logs that match; I'm with you and think that's illegal. I was told I was wrong when I first said that. The ONLY time I "know" it's legal is in the event logs go down and come back up in the middle of paper logging.

 

Wrong. FMCSA regulations actually REQUIRE multiple log books in certain situations. The only thing prohibited by the regulations is FALSIFYING your log. As long as ALL of your log books agree with how you spent your time, and that all matches up with whatever time stamps you have on BOLs, receipts, etc., then you haven't falsified anything. So what are they going to write you up for?

 

When I was at roehl your elogs were your legal logs that you would give to DOT and the paper was just for the company to know you know what to do with both.


Like what was said, only hand over one log, no need to show the officer both.

 

You can draw up as many copies of your log book as you want to. As long as they all match, you haven't broken any regulations. Falsification is what they don't like to see. Don't falsify your logs, and no matter how many copies you draw up you'll have nothing to worry about.

 

So to be safe just write on the bottom "Training purposes only" make it big enough so its not even a question. Do not sign the paper logs either. Better to be safe than sorry. Dont want to get that one dot offer that wants to be that guy.

 

Not signing the pages doesn't mean anything. Officers can still cite violations found on an unsigned form.

 

Exactly. Even if it's training purposes you'd still need to sign them. I learned to never leave ANY spaces unsigned or blank on a paper log.

 

I would call the company and ask. When I was training on e-logs, the paper was to be the dominant log and the e-log was practice, so I would still have to sign it and fill it out, just like any other time, see which way your company wants to you to do it.

 

Blank spaces are OK, as long as they aren't required information under the regulations. Typical log books have a lot of spaces that are unnecessary. Some spaces are company-specific (i.e. Driver ID) while others MIGHT be required in certain instances (i.e. co-driver)...while other blanks are there just for your own reference (i.e. recap).

 

Make sure you dont sign the paperlog when e-log is up and running. Remember that a signature makes a document official. You cannot have 2 logs running at the same time as it would be considered double-logging. Fines for logs can be really expensive and affect your scores as a driver
