I double clutch most of the time. Reason is that my trainer was not very good, and I was more comfortable doing it. My trainer tried to teach me, but when the shifter didn't come out at the rpms that he told me it should, I told him and asked him for help, he said that he didn't know what the issue was and to just double clutch. I have been doing it for a year now. I am trying to teach myself. Have been floating a lot more, especially on light loads, but still like to double clutch. I already have bad knees so I figure what the hey.

Used to float gears, couple weeks after gettin hired but now we've switched to automatics. Definitely somethin you'd want to learn, it's all about that muscle memory.

When I float, I don't look at the rpm at all. I learned based on feel, so looking kind of screws me up.

Floating happens, for anyone that doesn't know, when the gears all are going the same speed. You can either time it right, or use the accelerator to balance it out. When the gears are all going the same speed (both the engine and transmission), it'll come out of gear using only light pressure. You won't need to force it out. Same thing happens when downshifting, but you do need better timing to float while downshifting.

Like I said, I learned by feel. A 4-wheeler doesn't operate the same, but I had a cantankerous '88 ranger I learned with. My grandfather taught me that, but he covered up the gauges so I couldn't read them and was forced to learn by feel.

Heres a secret. Most float because they never learned to double shift. LOL You should be able to do it both ways with skill.

Don't know where the leg issues are. If your clutch pedal is adjusted correctly it only takes a light touch to make the shift. What kills both legs is sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for hours. You wanna learn. Double shift first five get it up to 45 or so and then practice on the higher gears. Its more forgiving. You don't lose too much when trying to find the gear. If you screw it up just double clutch to keep it going. Then when you get comfortable with that do it at the lower gears. Remember so what if you mess it up you can double clutch it to regain a gear. Same process for down shifting. Do it in the higher gears first.

    Vilhiem and 123456 Thank this.

Just never understood the issue about all of it. You can float? Well good for you I'm impressed. You can't? Still don't care. Its an automatic? Meh still don't care. Each has its pluses at times. City traffic most of the time? Give me the auto. Big loads or heavy I'll take the 13 or 18 speed. General freight meh, the 10 is fine.
