Well folks, here we go, I am going (unwillingly) to retire from the Military and get back to driving. I love driving, just love the Military more.
So now I get to decide between 4 different carriers and what a choice. 2 small (100 power units or less) local companies, still driving OTR, but they are both out of Salt Lake City. then a company of I think, 800 power units or so. And a Mega carrier (whom I have already worked for once before) Crete is offering .45-.48 per mile, but will I get the miles? JBS, out of Denver is offering less per mile, but said "on average" the drivers are making around 60,000 per year for Western Regional, then the smaller carriers are both offering .35 per mile. but I know I will be getting the miles. (It's allot easier to talk to the drivers from these local carriers to be able to understand what they are making) I have not totally thrown Clark, or Pride to the curb yet. so make that 6 carriers.
All companies are offering newer equipment. I have worked for Crete before and had issues with dispatch, and was not getting good miles toward the end. (I hear they have changed the way they dispatch since 2007). All companies offer idle bonuses, mileage bonuses etc.
I will no longer need to worry about making it home for drill once a month, so that will help get the miles.
I have been researching all companies, and have thought about going back to Andrus, but I have an 11 year old son I like to take with me, and their rider policy is 16 years or older.
I would like your thoughts on this, I know everyone has opinions and some will talk negative about companies, but it will give me some idea.
This is a great site and allot of knowledge, that is why I'm askin.

OK, I think of it like this, if company A is offering .45 CPM, but miles is 2300 per week, that's $1035 gross, and company B is offering .35 CPM, and miles are 3000 per week, that's $1050 gross, that's 700 miles more for $15 dollars, I'd rather take the less mile, not worth driving the extra miles, in my opinion
blairandgretchen and Snowshoes Thank this. -
700 miles in a 65 MPH truck is just about 11 hours, as in my previous post $15 for 11 hours is $1.36 per hour

True enough, but my issue with Crete before was, I was getting 300-600 mile runs deliverable in 3 days type thing. This would happen more than I liked. I would imagine things have changed a great deal since then. But I am still a little gun shy when it comes to them. Ya know?

I think Crete is governed at 65 or so as well. One of the small carriers is not governed, but if you want to make the fuel usage bonus....well....

Have you thought about working for a dirt contractor? Running dump trucks usually start at 4-5 am run most of a 12 hour day. Get to go home at night and be with son and missus (presuming there is one).

I have, and I do have an application in to a few companies, so far have not heard back from them, I have applied with a few oil haulers as well. Still waiting to hear from them. I won't retire until March and I am willing to bet that local work in construction will be booming then.
Thanks for your advice. I really appreciate it!

60 on western regional. All I can say is whatever a recruiter says. Subtract 10 to 20 thousand in gross. Subtract about 500 in miles and you should be a happy camper. Create trucks go 62 or 63.
Snowshoes Thanks this. -
That is what I was thinking as well. After 20 years in the Military, I have to agree with what you say about a recruiter...LOLDinomite Thanks this.

Been with a Crete for about 2 years now. I finished the year with a little under 125k miles on the year (OTR) and wound up just short of 60k. You will find the occasional BS shorthaul but they're less and less common these days. My average length of haul for 2014 was 755 miles (I'm pulling all of this info from my December end of month report). Overall I can't complain much other than the fact Crete trucks are governed at 62.
Snowshoes Thanks this.
