Suggestions? Permits, route surveys, and reroute issues

    need advise and input from you guys that have more exp. I picked up a load in NM Tuesday 16 W 16 H.
    NM asked for a route survey which I got and got sent in and received permits. Problem was TX wouldn't issue permit due to bad weather. So I stop , ask for a reroute and was told I need a re route re survey lol.
    My re route survey got refused and my route wasn't approved til Fri. so I sat in NM from Tues til Fri.

    I would try to get a hold of the NM permit dept and no luck. The guy doing the route survey was a local guy and Ive always had luck with the permit service I use to help me order permits.
    Im not sure how I could have handled this different and sure I don't want a repeat.

    Hi Ric. I accepted two OD loads today. Broker says it has to be delivered 08:00 this coming Saturday. He gave me the dims, PU and DEL addy and I said I would call him back.

    1st thing I did was check the weather forecast at several places along the route.

    and if they didn't issue because of weather there was a reason, should have left that permit alone and waited on weather , probably would have moved sooner... when doing od you have to be patient sometimes

    It sucks to be caught in that situation but in all honesty there is no good hard and fast rule of thumb for that situation. Especially when your in a situation where the next state refuses a permit for whatever reason and your in a state that requires a route survey.

    We've (I've) sat for 3 weeks due to permit issues in the next state. We just had a load that took 63 days from Ontario, CA to Maine. It sat in Youngstown, OH for 5 weeks because of permit problems in Pennsylvania. They wouldn't route it out into New York where New York was routing it in. Dozens of route surveys later and weeks of conference calls, a bridge assessment and a bridge bond before it finally ran the last 3 days to the delivery point.

    My advice, make sure you have detention in the rate confirmation or enough money to cover detention. Big OD comes with big money, big headaches and even bigger delays. We run a 19' 6" wide load on the exact same route every week, 50 weeks a year and only 1 out of 10 trips goes as planned, the other 9 involve getting stuck somewhere because of something.

    What permit agency are you using? Might be worth using one. We used them for everything. One call, tell em what ya got, what states, in some cases what route you would prefer. Your only dealing with one person and one phone call. If you do the same route ya just tell them the same as last one. Simple. Some agency know what to say, when to say it. Plus you get all your permits at once. They also will let you know the expiration dates from state to state and wait to order them so you don't have delays.

    Just saying you could have had the TX one issued before the weather got bad.

    Can't remember their name sorry that was two years or so ago. But they were based out of Jefferson City, MO. I do believe. We were paying for escorts, motel, lay over, no goes, and other fees. A day or two delay because of permits is the difference between making a chunk and losing a chunk. Permits are confusing. Takes a while to get used to them.

    You may not need a route survey in NM if you stay off interstate, over 15-6 on the interstate they want a survey but not if you stay off the Interstate.
