Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Wanted to give you a few pointers. Looks like your husband has a lot to offer as a new truck driver. Has many good things in his favor for getting into the business. My best advice is to be more persistent and look farther into applications with more companies. Somewhere I read in a truckers forum that TMC might be in financial troubles so that could explain why they turned him down.
Wouldn't think that it would be worth the effort and especially the expenses of a professional resume and cover letter. Most of the people that are hiring in the trucking industry wouldn't know what to do with a cover letter and resume. For instance, when I was in the white collar industry, it was a great idea to send in a resume with cover letter. You always have to fill out an application but there were many times that the person interviewing me would get lost among the application, cover letter, and resume.
Your husband needs to get his foot in the door of the business before he gets too choosy. A few of the companies that you think don't pay as well might be better than the ones that you think pay better. Remember that you can always go with a company that has a higher mileage rate of pay but might not give you many miles to drive. What really matters is what you get in your paycheck at the end of the week. You really have to weigh all the possibilities that each and every prospective trucking company has to offer you.
Trucking companies sometimes show up at truck driving schools to recruit drivers to come to work at their companies. Werner Transportation is a good one that their recruiters will come in and wow the students over by telling them about their great equipment. Check out all the negative stories about Werner from their drivers on this and other trucker web sites.
If you and your husband can handle it, don't shy away from companies where he might have to go over the road all over the country for a year or so. A lot of drivers are put off by that but its experience that can hardly be beat. You get to see so many things out there and experience so many more things than if you only drive local or in a few nearby states.
Best wishes to you and your husband. He is starting out of school with some really good points in his favor. There are companies out there that would snap him up soon only if they know that he's available for them. -
Good point. He had to create a resume for his class so I figured why not use it. I'm an accountant at a big company so I guess it's "normal" to me to deal with resumes. But this is good to know going forward.
Yep..totally agree with you here.
Yep again. We're both committed to this decision and going OTR will open up many doors. I'm the daughter of an OTR driver, and I am okay with my husband going OTR. We'll be just fine. He's supported me for years while I went back to college for my accounting degree, it's my turn to let him pursue what he wants.
It's dancing that fine line between being too picky but not picky enough. That's why I'm here...thanks again! -
Did you call jeff foster? Call them and go to ext. 405 talk to greg owens when I started there they were hiring people just out of school. he will have to out with a trainer for a few weeks.

Thanks! I will tell my hubby asap to give them a call.

look up sharedmed on the internet, you know the rest. They don't usually hire with no experience but if they need someone bad enough in that area and he makes a good impression they may. This is mobile medical scanners and I don't know off hand what they have that far north but they do the whole midwest and have some in deluth etc. They are good folks and it's a good job, I had 7 years in before I moved to TX. the route drivers don't make a whole lot but they do okay and the job sure beats general trucking. I did about 70k a year there but I wasn't a route driver

Thanks medicineman! Hubby and I checked out their website, read the job description, and his nose crinkled up. The "medical assistant" part of the job didn't appeal to him. Nothing open in our area, too.
He gave Foster a call and was really happy with how the fella treated him..he's going to submit his app tonight. We're trying to find both the good and the bad but so far not finding much....that's probably a good thing.

Medical assisting is walking the patient on the lift (or rolling them) and pushing the up button
If you were in Milwaukee or madison I could help more, sorry -
As far as I am concerned there is no bad about foster. They are an open door company and small but they have the loads. I had some family stuff come up and thats the only reason why I do not work for them anymore.
my fault not theirs. They will work with a person in about any way they can and thier equipment is great. -
"maybe try a more local company like a tanker for a gas station rig"
NO company would hire a student to sling gasoline around!
