Its just not realistically"a job that everybody can do". It can be TOUGH physically and mentally. So much to accomplish to get thru daily. Truck breakdowns, accidents, route planning,DOT,weather, getting tired. By all means try it but,its not for everyone. There can be so much to go wrong at any time. Scanners,E logs, for me every day is like a journey to get thru.

I feel real good about starting a new career driving it's just that everyone I talk to about discourages me to do it. Just wondering if I'm missing something.

Scott I see the drive in your eyes. You will do well. Some have it and some don't. It's not a job it's an adventure. I look forward to sharing the road with ya. Who needs family when you have
    The truckers report. :)

There's a lot of down sides to trucking, what with new regulations, an ever changing playing field, safety advocates. blah, blah, blah but...... if your sure that this is what you want, and your wife agrees, go for it. First couple of years won't be great, but then, that would be the same for starting any new job.

I retired from a state job, and gotta tell ya, the last 10 years there were miserable. This is something I've always wanted to do, so took the chance. Truth is, some things out here suck but...... my worst day out here, is way better than the best day I ever had, my last 10 years in the other job.

You want to come out here? Go for it, work hard, keep your nose clean, and look for that better job. Like Dinomite said, I'll also look forward to sharing the road with you. Need people out here with that passion!!!!!!

Are you not making a good living for them now in your present job? Stepping up to Class A doesn't mean an increase in pay especially in the early years while you still sorting it out. If you are paying your bills and able to be home with your kids and wife then stay in your present job. If the kids are old enough and the wife might be able to ride along at times then maybe. It is a thankless job with long hours.

Life is a trade off. It can be difficult for those with young children to be away from home. But, most higher earners sacrifice time at home with family for a better income and way of life. Not everyone is cut out to be an otr truck driver. However, for those who enjoy life on the road, it can be a rewarding career choice.
